New scope about $500 to spend

I want to put this on an FX crown .22. Two answers first what scope and why. Looking at Hawke and Aztec somewhere in 4x16 to 6x24 or ?. Second mount, kinda looking at FX. OK third how would you set this combo up, Synthetic, wood,or Laminate. OK not looking for non experienced wish list, looking for higher end gunners or competitor. Most likely at 70 plus my competitor years are gone but still like to send lead down range. More of a back yard or ground squirrel hunter.

Thanks

Ive owned a bunch of scopes over the years and still compete at my creaky old age of 78. For FT, my favorite is the Hawke Sidewinder 6-24 with the 1/2 20X mildot reticle. This scope ranges well, which is important. For BR, I swear by my Sightron S3 10-50X60 fine cross hair, but that one is $750 if you're lucky enough to find one at that price. I just acquired an Aztec 5.5-25 2nd fp. I must say that this is a good all around scope for general use. It is lighter and more compact than my others. That would be an excellent choice. As far as the 1st ffp that seems to be the craze today, I don't get it . I usually set the magnification at one setting, so the 2ffp is kinda meaningless to me.

Now sure how the lifetime warranty works on the Aztec but Hawke has already proven themselves when it comes to warranty or customer satisfaction if ever needed. I was blown away by them sending ring shims (which they do sell) no charge for a customer who posted here on AGN.

I would personally lean towards whomever would provide the most satisfactory warranty to back their customers' needs who has already been around for a while now.

I own both Aztec and Hawke brand just so you know... and have never needed to have any warrantied yet (knock on wood).

Currently I have this scope on my Fx Crown .30... I’m sure the 4-16 is probably close to the 500 dollar price tag... I love the scope on my Crown... my only complaint is that at full magnification the reticle gets pretty thick... I was always told that once you go FFP, you don’t want to go back and I can understand that now... a lot less conversion every time you want to adjust the magnification. I’ve heard a lot of people say they like a fixed 10 power SWFA scope... I’m not sure that’s for me... I like the ability to get in close on tiny objects... but maybe it’s for you...

Good Luck in your decision! Shoot the piss out of that gun... I LOVE mine!

I second this recommendation and it comes in right around your price point. I think there are one or two on the classifieds right now also for under $500. I have one on my RAW and really

like it a lot. Reticle at full power doesn't bother me, but it is a bit thin at the lowest power.

I tried FFP scopes and personally find it really difficult to see the reticle using the lower power settings and does get a bit on the fatty side when set at maximum. SFP is fine for my use and more comfortable for my eyes and doesn't make me dizzy if that makes any sense. Some like them while others don't. You have to handle and look through one for yourself to be the judge whether or not you could live with a FFP scope. Otherwise you could just be spending the extra money for a scope that you really wouldn't be happy to use.

The fixed 10 SWFA with side focus is a very good hunting scope. Clear, bright, great reticle, tracks perfectly, tough as nails and lighter weight... what’s not to like? If a person needs or wants more magnification...OK, but this 10X scope is awesome.

Athlon Helos BTR 6-24x50 ffp

side focus paralax from 10yards which is very good for us airgunners

solid build

good picture

nice reticle moa or mil yours choice

Athlon warranty

bought two of them and must say I’m very happy

Currently got aztec on warcat and had few Hawke Sidewinders before and must say in my opinion helos is better

Take a look at the Bushnell Engage 4-16x44 with Deploy MOA reticle. They also have a 6-24x50 version but I don’t have first hand experience with that one

Lghtweight, about 20 ounces, 30mm tube, very clear glass, good repeatable turrets, detailed reticle great for holdover.

I have two of these scopes, can’t find a better scope under $500.

Hello Len. Don't give up competing just because you are getting a little seasoned at 70. I'm only a few years behind and competing is a blast. Just because we shake and can't see does not mean we can't try. One thing to consider on your quest for a scope is the weight. A lot of these scopes are just heavy at 30 plus oz. When installed on the gun along with a bipod, sling, mag holders and such the total gets heavy if your using it to hunt where your packing it around. That being said if your just bench shooting it has no bearing. In general the weight on a 6x24 is almost the same as a 8x32 and I've found for my own use the extra power comes in handy for older eyes. I have Hawke, Athlon, Vortex and Leupold. They are all great scopes. Tried a friends Aztec the other day and was really impressed with it also. One thing I would recommend is to get a scope where the turrets and reticle are the same. Moa and moa or rad and rad. Not moa and rad. Good luck. Sylvan

Do not discount the Discovery FFP scopes. I have one on my new Crown and it is superb. Check Aliexpress for current pricing, but my VTR-T 4.5-18x44 (SFVF-N) is just superb for the Crown. It came with a camera mount and mount rings of your choice all for a little more than half your budget. I believe there is a review of this scope on YouTube. I saw it and decided to give it a try. I am not disappointed at all.

Another vote for Sightron. I have 2 of their S-TAC 4-20x50 scopes - 1 duplex and 1 MOA. The quality of the glass is excellent for this price range (7 layer multi-coated) and they are bright and clear in low light situations. I used BKL centering mounts and needed very few clicks from optical center to zero them in. The parallax adjustment is on the side and goes down to 27 feet for close in shooting and the eye relief is pretty generous. The scopes are on a .22 Daystate Regal and .22 Air Arms S510 Ultimate Sporter. Last week, I picked up the duplex version for $327 on amazon prime. They are normally closer to $400.
