New rifle musing

Ok, I traded off my beloved Crown. So now I have no backup for my Impact that I keep screwing up.

I will get another FX, I'm not interested in anything else.

I havent even decided on the calibur yet but something occurred to me during my musing on it.

FX will be releasing a .357 Impact sometime this century. While I have absolutly no desire, or use for a .357 I would think that the .357 Impact would have to have more power in every conceivable way.

So, if you will still be able to change caliber on it, and you had a desire to shoot .22, or .25 slugs I'm thinking perhaps you'd get a significant FPS, and therefore accuracy boost over the lower caliber versions now available.

That makes sense... There's a member on here that did the same thing with a .35 caliber Cricket. He modified it to shoot .25 caliber slugs. Not sure how it turned out, but I know that he did finish the project and it is very powerful...

It's logical, and makes sense.

Therefore I fully expect it to be totally wrong....lol

A fun idea when pondering a new gun tho.

Might not be the most financially feasible option being the .357 might come at more expense, and then you include buying a new barrel and possibly requiring modification to still achieve desired power, I would have to say wait and see if the idea is financially advantageous over just getting a 700 mm slug lined .25 cal and having it hogged out for power with a big plenum and valve.

What's this "financially feasible" thing you speak of?

I shoot a $4500+ pellet gun, plus another $3500 in support equipment, plus untold thousands in "experience".

It would have been more financially feasible to buy swamp land in Florida.

But.....I'm Blonde, and easily lead astray by evil companions, slick sales people, and you people on AGN.

Get an airgun, it's only $500......they said.

Oh, the initial investment is the expensive part. Damn near free after that....they said.

It's fun, but it won't take over your life....they said.

Easier, and less to learn than a firearm....they said.

Etc etc etc

You're all liars and are going to hell for corrupting an innocent woman!!

And, I thank you for it every day :)

I agree with you, once I put my springers away and got a pcp...the $$$ started departing.

I’ll buy that all but the innocent part. All things being equal I’ve had the same experience. It is fun though isn’t it ? I don’t have any one to blame but myself . My wife after 48 years takes no responsibility for my crazy hobbies. I think she’s just happy I’m not looking over her shoulders and never complains if I go shooting . After that length of time you work out the details. I’d go NUTS if I didn’t have something to play with. Airguns can get expensive but as compared to other things we ( mostly men) do it not too bad

As for long range accuracy I'm not sure if the same principals apply but with powder burners the larger the caliber and heavier the round the farther the accuracy.

It's about ballistic coefficient and velocity in combination together as far as long range with a centerfire is concerned. In other words 45-70 isn't the best for long range, BC low, speed slow, especially compared against 375 Cheytac which is the opposite.

Another interesting comparison is "my" 223AI load against my 308Win load. The former sends the same BC bullet 250 fps faster, since energy isn't important for shooting on steel or paper, the less wind drift makes for higher hit ratio. Or comparing, my 308 to my 6.5 Saum, the latter which totally destroys it in drop and drift.

Then there's precision, which is the mechanical capability of the system, .1 moa, .5 moa, 1 moa, etc. Accuracy is the ability of the shooter to place a shot or shots where they are intended to go. Of course we want both precision and accuracy no matter the gun.

As to pellets, I sure would like to see the JSB 22cal monster redesign's form factor put into 25 and 30 caliber. Because it seems that a sweet spot in velocity for those 22's is at 980 fps. We could probably see a .055 BC for a 25 cal in 40gr, and .065 BC in a 60gr 30 cal pellet - so less wind drift and more energy. Then we'd need even more powerful PCP's though. Whereas it also seems that the current 34gr 25 cal and the 50gr 30 cal work best around 840-920 fps.

Fun stuff!!!
