New R9 in the collection. NOW can I join the HW fan-boi club?

Nah, really, it's a fine gun. Just seems to be a lot of HW posts here. This one will be my first, assuming "Beeman" counts.

Haven't figured out why yet, as I really am not enjoying shooting it as much as I had expected. I've yet to nail down exactly what "it" is. Perhaps because it's the smallest of all I have, at only 42" long. For a guy that's 6'2", 200+lbs, it feels too small for me.


Waited so long, not just for the funds, but all the time and research that went into finding the "right" one. Just to realize the ones I have at a fraction of the cost are a better fit.

Maybe I should have picked up a new ASP20 before Sig stopped selling them.



It shoots fine. But heck, at just 25-yards bench-rest, everything does. My $150 Gamo can do this too.

Even paid extra to get a tuned model.

Okay, so obviously I'm having buyer's remorse. I *want* to like it. Someone talk me into not putting this up for sale.

Welcome to the Beemans nice looking gun. I have had a Beeman R9 TK Maccari in .177 cal for years, and I love the gun. It needs a re-tuning, a this year project, but still accurate as can be.

Give the gun a chance. One tin of pellets down range should change your mine. You will be hard pressed to find a better trigger. Just shoot the hell out of it.

I have two Beeman R9s, both are 20 years old. One is a standard Beeman R9 with a replacement Maccari field target spring, and the other is a Beeman R9 TK Maccari with a blue laminate stock. Both are .177, both are very accurate.

I prefer the TK Maccari between the two R9s, but truth be told, I prefer the relaxed shooting of my Beeman R7 for my current needs.

I just bought a hw50s, the smaller cousin to the 95/r9. The size feels just right to me and I'm 6'5" 235#, but it's personal preference I know. You may be doing this but...Some folks here or on GTA, I forget, said to rest the gun on the balance point. Your pic looks like you are just in front of that balance point which for me is closer to the trigger guard. Maybe that will help. It seems to help me, but I'm still learning also. Good luck.

ETA Also I have a soft, fatter bag if that makes a difference????

@bandg thanks. After I return to the USA I will send it to someone to get rebuilt and tuned. My R9 has essentially sat for 10 years other than occasional use.

I have the Beeman R9 in .177 and the others are HW98s (.177, .20, .25) or HW35E .177s (I have two: one in blue and one in silver) and also an HW80 .177.

I always pass up my R9 .177 in favor of the HW98 .177 because the Beeman version is less powered and so so in velocity if not the worse for the mainspring which is equivalent to the HW98s I have that are made and sold under HW name instead of the transferred Beeman Logo after Beeman gave up his own brand and sold it to Air Venturi or whoever has it now.

I have found the Beeman name means nothing to me but the HW name means everything.

Yes my Beeman R9 .177 is a slow poke and substandard performer compared to my HW98 .177.

That is a lovely rifle! I ended up with a regular Beeman R9 and that isn't the same as a limited edition. Congrats!

@shambozzie..., almost. Mine has the Maccari TK mods including the shrouded barrel. Otherwise, that's the one.

The Swift scope has a broken reticle, so I'm looking for a replacement.

Maybe the length of pull is throwing the feel off ? I know I absolutely love the R9 version I have. It fits quite well , much better than the HW80 or HW90. There are spacers available or even put one of the pachmayer shotgun spacers on . It might end up with you liking it better. I will agree that I would put a full tin of pellets through it before you decide to put it up for sale. Don’t forget to adjust the trigger to your liking while you’re at it.

yeah, i have to pull in real close just to get the buttpad to touch my shoulder. smallest rifle i own.

(compared to my 12lb, 54" long Parrus especially!)


already on the 2nd tin of pellets. i'll continue to try forcing myself to love it. like an arranged wedding. lol



i sure like look forward to shooting a gun. VS this one, in my mind at the moment, it's like "bleh, grab the gamo".

I do have an R9 and it's compact profile may not be comfortable or even useful for some purposes; I would highly recommend the HW90 if you decide to try another gun - it won't be a disappointment!

Although a solid $100 more, I almost chose the 98. Or the HW97. The '90 is almost $800, and at that price, I'd just buy a real gun.

Already took a lot of convincing myself to spend as much as I did for the R9!


Oh well, too late now. I'll give it a few more solid tries before selling it off to someone who'll enjoy it more than I.

@pdxFrank, Try something like this. Roll up a blanket, we need soft. Fine the balance point on gun, most favor a tad at the end of bbl. You know the rest. Follow through and for God's sake keep the thumb pointed up.

No no no never think a rifle you got is a mistake.

The HW98 is easy to get to like in pretty immediate order and keep it that way.

It seems the lighter guns and barrels need some working in time like my HW50s needed to "get used to."

You CAN get an HW98 in ANY caliber and NEVER regret it.

I need only the .22 version which I have put off because I already have the HW80K .22 Long Range Hunter with the HW95L .22 and an HW35E .22.

Point is keep all you are buying and take time with each one to know it and put it aside while going to another one and then another in rotation.

Pretty soon all the rifles in rotation will feel like they belong in this sort round robin or trapshoot to hit the target at 35 yards. All will do that.
