New Need Help Choosing Rifle

LongshotFan,

Thanks for the reply. I definitely want to deal with the squirrels but, I think I will enjoy plinking some of the different target outside of paper targets.

Recoil does concern me and that is why I was considering a model with some kind of management system. Another concern is if I do like plinking, loading an underlever can be taxing but, I would think using a manual pump to pressurize a PCP might be taxing too?

If I go the PCP route, I will add an electric pump. I am still undecided and learning. :)
The thing I liked best about PCP’s is the trigger. the Break on my rifles has been a joy and the guns are more accurate than I am. It’s fun trying to increase skills each time I shoot. When you’re researching, don’t get sucked into all the extras. You need:
  • Gun and ammo
  • Scope
  • Way to refill your gun
you can figure out the rest after you get shooting. There are many more things you’ll need, but this is enough to try things out and then adjust as needed. You will eventually need things for maintenance.

Thanks for all of the replies and for all of the information. And for not making me feel like a dummy with all my questions. :)

I am definitely leaning towards the PCP side. There are several factors, including lack of recoil, ease of follow-up shots, and adjustability. It seems a little more costly up front but I only want to "cry once". :D

I keep researching and reading and I keep coming back to the Benjamin Marauder as a decent option in my price range. I have learned there is a standard barrel, a Lothar Walther barrel and a SAM model. For those that have experience with the Marauder, is there a big difference in performance between these 3 models? I am more interested in difference in accuracy with the different models?

One last question, I know from carpentry experience, compressing air causes moisture build up in compressors and tools can be affected. Are PCP rifles subject to the same moisture build up? If so, what is done to reduce/prevent it?

You are correct about moisture buildup. There's a whole other topic that discusses compressors and how the members are dealing with moisture in each model. When you have the model you're looking at, you can search for threads related and see solutions.

Good luck!

I've got a Marauder Regulated Lothar on the way. My first "real" / "grown-up" air rifle. I have never heard of the "SAM" model. Got a link?

ETA: I just figured out "SAM." Semi-auto.

I should hopefully have "first shots" next weekend and will report back!
