Hello all, I'm Harry and I've just recently created an account here. I'm looking forward to learning all I can about airgunning. I am a long time firearms enthusiast and had a few air rifles and CO2 powered replica handguns in my youth. Over the years I gradually devoted more time and money to firearms, and its safe to say I have a lot of catching up to do with regard to modern air rifle/pistol tech. I'm interested in purchasing some airguns both for my own enjoyment as well as too help teach my son about firearms and safe weapons handling. I'm considering starting out with a C02 operated pellet rifle and could use advice on which models I should look at. Thanks so much in advance!

Or skip co2 guns and go strait to PCP guns. A Benjamin Marauder is a good starter rifle.
The problem with co2 guns is that most of them aren't very good. Some are fun for a week but a PCP rifle is more useful.

If you just want to relive having a co2 gun? I had a 180 crosman long ago. And the 2260 is a very close match. And you can use the AGNATION code for 25% off when ordering. I have one and it is a fun rifle but like any co2 they don't work as well when its really cold. I also ordered a co2 pistol thru Crosman's custom shop 2300KT it was cheaper that way than buying parts and building one. But I have to agree with zebra if I was doing it I would go with a Maximus, Discovery, or Marauder and buy a pump. And the age of your son can make a difference. My grandsons are now 11 and 14 and shoot most of my rifles but a few years ago they loved the co2 guns.(and still use them) but the 14 year old has started picking up the .22 Maximus when doing a walk-around.

Chip the 1077 looks like a fun co2 to play with. Not sure what the fps would look like shooting co2 that fast? Does the co2 try to freeze up with semi auto fire? And I don't let the boys here shoot any of my 25-30 round semi-auto rifles. I call them "bad habit guns". Or spray and pray.

Like most hobbies in life you have to devote a good bit of time educating yourself first. Then additional investment of time in the practice of the hobby. This is a good place to start with the education part. Youtube will show you what a PCP gun is capable of. You will be amazed by folks making 100 yard shots on small game. Get lazy and you will waste time, money and not enjoy the hobby nearly as much as you could have. Before you go CO2 consider PCP but be advised the fill station will not come cheap.

Thank you for all the valuable information! I decided to bite the bullet last night, and ordered a OB78 Deluxe from Pyramid Air. I've also spent a lot of time over the last few days browsing the web and reading all I can find on airguns of various types and calibers. I definitely see a big bore air rifle in my future! I think the QB78 will prove to be a very fun plinker, and a good way to practice basic marksmanship and rifle handling skills. When we are ready to take things to the next level the Benjamin Discovery looks like a fairly impressive rifle. I see it's offered with a hand pump in some combos. Is this adequate or should I be thinking of investing in a scuba tank/fill station? Also, does anyone have any recommendations for reactive targets aside from the old standby of soda cans? I want to make shooting as enjoyable as possible.

Congrats on your decision, the QBs are well loved plinkers and close range hunters. You can use the open sights and scope it later. If you want to tinker you can get a tune kit for a bit more power from Archer Airguns.

As far as pumping a Discovery, it's a toss up-if your son doing the work it'll make him appreciate the value of a well placed shot. The Discovery and Maximus are low pressure guns so pumping should be pretty easy. If you opt for a scuba tank you'll get lots of fills between trips to the dive shop or wherever you get the tank filled.

Chip the 1077 looks like a fun co2 to play with. Not sure what the fps would look like shooting co2 that fast? Does the co2 try to freeze up with semi auto fire? And I don't let the boys here shoot any of my 25-30 round semi-auto rifles. I call them "bad habit guns". Or spray and pray.

nyenthusiest, I have myself become an air gun convert from firearms. I love the stealth aspect, and am harvesting much more game than I ever did with powder-burners! I have been evolving rapidly in the air gunning culture. I too had my share of BB and pellet guns as a kid, but 40 years has produced truly remarkable air gun technology. I started with a Benjamin Marauder .22 pistol (which I just sold), then progressed to a Daystate Pulsar .25. I now use an FX Impact .30.
I will be placing my Daystate in the AGN classifieds soon, so keep an eye out! It is an excellent small game weapon. I suggest you hit the ground running with a PCP, since you will almost instantly wish you had if you buy a lesser gun.
