Hello AirGunners,

First off thank you to the mods, sponsors and posters for a very interesting Airgun forum.

I'm fairly new to airguns and I have followed the typical evolution from break barrels to pcps. To say I struggle with the .17 break barrel is an understatement, but I plan to spend more time with that rifle to home my skills. I also have a .25 Hatsan Flash and a Benjamin Bulldog.

So I should add that I'm 63 and have recently passed my hunters safety so with my licence in hand I plan to focus mainly on jackrabbits as they are numerous in the desert close to my home here in Redlands, CA. Maybe this summer when rabbit season is open again I'll try to get a hunting permission closer to home.

Recently I headed out from a very calm Redlands to Snow Creek Rd to hunt for jackrabbits. When I arrived out at Snow Creek the winds were gusting to 45 mph, so I left the Bulldog in the truck and just hiked a couple of miles. I have seen a few jackrabbits in this area but the BLM land is chopped up into small sections. So here is a short video to show the wind and terrain.

Thank you Ydunn.223

I did head out to Snow Creek again with a friend 2 weeks ago, he brought his backpack Ruger 10/22, I brought the Flash, the Bulldog and my crossbow. There is a twin high voltage power line that heads over the mountain (towers 73) but BLM land butts right to the mountain with a good 100 yard range, we had a good 6 hours of fun.

In these vids and still photos Singh is shooting my Bulldog and crossbow. Also some pictures of this isolated shooting area.

My Nikon is in the repair shop for a control power issue, when I get it back I will post some attempted hunting jackrabbit vids.

Thank you Mike, and intenseaty22

You know now that you mention in tent seaty, I'm thinking seriously about using my Barrett Big Cat blind to get those rascally jack rabbits. I have seen that the jacks are extremely skittish, as I did go out to try a hunt in Morongo Valley. I saw 8 of those long eared critters but when I started a spot and stalk they would giddyup away. I did however notice that they are extremely curious as when I was having my sandwich for lunch one of the jackrabbits was doing a spot and stalk on me. I noticed him and ranged him first at 65 yards, I went to get the Bulldog from the backseat, load a magazine and get back behind the hood section of the truck, at this point the jack had moved in to 35 yards, then the back door of the truck closed and he took off. He actually came in twice.

After lunch I headed east towards some hills trying to find my stalker, I turned around and I noticed another jack rabbit watching me, he was standing up perched under some scrub brush at 95 yards, as a novice hunter I wanted to move in closer so l slowly moved behind some cover to try to find a path closer, concealed. But you guessed it as soon as I moved behind cover it was gone.

So as I mentioned I'm going to try to call them in from my blind. HuntersVermin and other air gunners seem to have a lot of success with blind hunting so I'm going to give it a shot, pardon the pun. lol. What makes me think that this is the right path is I also watch Dana Webb and he has shared many jackrabbit hunting videos and of late he is having the same problem of the rabbits being extremely skittish. To be honest I'm not sure where Dana hunts, but could it be to human hunting pressure or are the coyote numbers higher making the varmints more alert? I did notice at Snow Creek that the animal trails are well worn and there is a lot of coyote skat. Further investigation required.

Maybe some predator hunters need to visit this area?

Thank you Revoman Mike, yeah I'm amazed at the scope of the topics on this site.

Just asking for a friend, is it okay to be checking out jackrabbit recipes before you actually get one?

So far the wascawwy wabbits are winning. But I did spend a very pleasant day in the desert.

And, I forgot about this The Airgun Hunter video. In this vid he bags a big jackrabbit from a blind.

Maybe I can get on one of these Jackrabbit roundups.

Or maybe I can sign up for the Jackrabbit Wars, many ongoing battles.
