New Matador R5M in .25

Finally pulled the trigger (oof bad pun) on a .25 Matador R5M. Paired with Helix 4-16x44 scope. Never fired anything like this and other than it being a bit loud at my ear absolutely love it! Thanks Brian and Edgun West. Very helpful with purchase and setup.

@damageINC Congrats on your new acquisition. I really like the R5M platform. If it’s loud to you, you may want to consider swapping out your stock moderator for an Edgun BAT moderator.
Thanks. It actually has a Bat on it. The action near my ear is where the noise is coming from. The business end is actually pretty silent. Just a chuff sound.

Congratulations - very nice air rifle. I own one in yellow and black laminate, back when Edgun West had those stocks available.

When new, mine had a pronounced ping from the action. Not too long ago, I took it apart to replace and or lubricate the regulator O-rings and replace a broken valve. When I did I polished the valve stem, polished the ends of the valve return spring, and put a very light coating of silicone grease on the valve return spring and the ping was gone.

I have mine set up to shoot jsb 25 grain at 890 FPS.

Even though it says it's rated for 300 bar fills, I would limit the fill pressure to around 230 bar to extend the life of the O-rings.

These rifles are extremely well engineered with maintenance in mind. Brian from Edgun West has put up some good videos for how to do it yourself.

I read your post that looks awesome. I assume you were pretty gingerly placing those parts in your drill head. Marring seems like it would affect reliability. Also is using grease inside the valve desirable?

Your advice about fill pressure tracks with what Brian said. 300 isn't as efficient and puts strain on internal parts.
 
Yes I chucked those parts lightly with no problems. Also no problem so far with the light coating of grease on the valve return spring. I had a hunch that it may have been vibrating kind of like the spring in a spring air gun during the shot cycle. The inside edges of each end of the spring had sharp corners where it was ground flat. I gently tapered these using a conical Dremel type Stone at slow speed in my cordless screwdriver. I thought this would help the spring sit on the plastic valve body better without causing stress concentrations. The small aft end of the valve is essentially a guide for the return spring. So far no problems. I did not put any grease on the valve face or valve pin shank.

I purchased a bunch of O-rings from www.theoringstore.com and got great service. Other threads have mentioned www.oringsandmore.com, but I don't have experience with them. I got all the sizes from the schematics which are also available from Edgun West's website.

Here is my order list with application, for Edgun R5M and Leshiy Classic. My plan is to get some divided fishing tackle boxes to organize these with labels for where they go in each rifle, kind of like ready-made kits you can get from places like Captain o-ring.com.

You sir, are a scholar and a gentleman. Thanks so much for that info! I'm still a little afraid of taking anything apart even though Brian showed me some of it. I don't want to be "that guy" who managed to break a relatively unbreakable gun. At least not yet. Will a Duro rating higher than 70 be better or is there a tradeoff between durability and quality of seal? Thanks so much again!

A durometer value of 70 works just fine. Some people like to use 90 for the breech seals. My factory breech seal has been holding up just fine as is. I lube my pellets with a combination of ballistol and Krytech bicycle chain wax Lube, so that reduces wear on the breech seal and the magazine O-rings.

One really cool feature of the r5m is that the bolt block slides completely off to the rear after removing one retaining screw, giving you full access to the bore for initial polishing and subsequent patch pulling / cleaning. Take care not to lose the O-ring between the bolt block and the breech when you do this. This was the only problem area I had on my r5m; the brass bushing on the breech had been dinged somewhere before the rifle made it to me, causing so much interference friction with the mating counterbore in the bolt block that I had to use a dowel and a hammer to tap the bolt block off the first time. I had to carefully file off the ding of the brass bushing with some jeweler's needle files and then it was okay. After that, gentle finger pressure was all that was required to remove the bolt block for maintenance.
