Hey Everybody, I've suddenly discovered air guns and they have my interest peaked! I do a lot of shooting with pistol and rifle and am fortunate enough to have access to a 100 yard range on my property. My 9 year old son wants to get into hunting, so I think that starting him off with an air rifle and hunting rabbits on my property might be a good start. These forums seem to be full of knowledge and information, so I excited to see how far the rabbit hole goes.

Cheers!

Welcome to the family. There are lots of great people here to answer all your questions and help you spend your money😂.

Welcome to the best forum on the web, air gun related or not. TONS of very knowledgeable folks here, you can learn a lot.
If you have questions, don't just ask "What's the best...." , you'll get a million opinion answers that will likely muddy it more.
Ask questions with the needed information, such as basic ranges of targets, caliber of gun, intended use (target, plinking, hunting, etc.), traditional or PCP, you get the picture.
The more information you provide with a question, the better defined the answers will be.
You'll like it here, enjoy the ride!

For a 9 year old weight and cocking action are critical. Look to the pistol/carbine PCP rifles like AirForce Escape UL, light weight bullpup like FX Dreamline bullpup or Umarex Notos.

Personally for a child I think the single shot AirForce is best.

The Notos is the lowest cost.

There are several more 4-6lbs guns out there. Do your research, make a list and share it here. Get the feedback. Some will be of the "i own one, it is the greatest" but a pretty easy to identify consensus should appear.

You can hand pump them or buy a compressor.

Not a fan of kids trying to cock break barrel rifles.

Welcome - ! Nothing better than a grandson in tow. Find him an old Sheridan pumper so he can build those arms!!

A Daisy 880 is cheap and easy to pump if you have doubts that your son will stick to the sport. Or get an R-7 (HW 30) and if he quits,, you have a gun you will love and use. Hardly see used guns of that model for sale. Another option is a low-power springer like this one that was designed for younger shooters. When he gets into the sport, surprise him with a better gun.

I’m been looking at the fx dreamlight. I found one on the forum, I’m just waiting for that pesky 10 day waiting period before I am allowed to direct message anybody. If anybody knows @bigmike, I’d love to talk to him!
Welcome, sorry about 10-day/10 "quality" post requirement for PM privileges and Classifieds, thank scammers for that. Best to stick to forum rules, trying to circumvent doesn't sit well with members. WM

The rabbit hole is only as deep as your pockets 🤣. The community here is one of the best parts of getting into air guns honestly, and AGN is the only online community I partake in.. I was in the same boat with my 9 year old son. I bought a PP700 for him for Christmas and made it a carbine. He enjoyed it, but single loading is difficult/frustrating even for his small hands. Especially in the woods with no ability for a quick follow up shot. Good gun safety habits by him have eliminated any concern on my end. Needless to say I sold it and now he has a Pinty bullpup (Snowpeak P35 clone). It certainly isn't for someone that doesn't like to tinker because a little work on it really smooths everything out. At the end of the day its a dirt cheap Chinese gun, but is dead nuts out to 50 yards. With no fear of "beating" it around in the woods or field. Buying kids airguns is the best excuse to give the wife! You'll be in the compressor rabbit hole soon.

Rabbit hole is definitely bottomless jump right in with the rest of us. Once you're gotten in there's always a need for more lead. Just ordered 15 tins of pellets today. But already know that 2,250 pellets won't be enough. 100+ pounds of lead for casting big bore slugs, not enough.
Maybe we air gunners need to invest in lead mines.🤔
Happy shooting

I’m definetly a tinkerer. My wife gets mad every time I disappear into the garage!

So I'm sure you've told her "it'll take 30 min", 3 hours later you get 🙄. If you like to tinker airguns will be right up your alley, always something to improve or modify. Spend hours and thousands of pellets tuning, only to realize where you started was where you wanted to be all along. At the end of the day, if you enjoy the trigger time, there is no wasted time.

Or you buy an Airforce Talon SS .22 for $100. Spend 30 minutes replacing the orings in the Tophat valve. Shoot a bunch of pellets and decide it needs MOAR POWER. So you buy a bunch of upgrades, 19" barrel, heavy spring, heavy hammer, high flow tophat, 120cc plenum, U adapter, 1.1L bottle and angle bottle adapter.

Put it all in the Talon and HOLLEE SHEET! 1100FPS with H&N Barracuda Match 21gr.

You have just spent $500+ to upgrade a gun you bought for $100. All those upgrades raised the value of that $100 gun to at least $300 possibly even $350.
