new guy here and have a question

hello all
new to the site and have a question about buying scopes.
a good buddy of mine just got into this hobby a few months ago
we don't have any air gun shops here or within 4 hrs. of driving.
in any case, he just bought a new scope after watching the manufacturers video on the scope
along with reviews, the scope comes he is all excited opens the box
slides the plastic off the scope .
looks through the scope and his reaction was its cloudy.
i said lets put it on the tri pod and look down the yard, he said its not clear
its cloudy still,,, i look through the scope definitely cloudy not clear
like it looked in the video, then again they had a camera on a mount centered behind the eye box
so i turn the power up to 16x this is a 6 -24 x50 gen2
a dark eyebrow appears look away look back still dark turn the power down it goes away.
i said look through my old Hawke sidewinder that's about the same price as the gen2.
set it up on the tri pod he said wow what a difference he said same money i said within 100 bucks
so he calls the dealer to ask if he can swap it out.
comes back and says because i opened the box and looked through the scope its non returnable
i said to him how are you supposed to know there is no dealers to go see it in person
what kind of BS is that i called and asked what the problem is with swapping it out its brand new
he opened the box we both looked through it and to be honest its far from clear this supposedly has
German glass in a Chinese made element? i said regardless he don't want it and it was not mounted
best we can do is give you halfback, i said no now you pissed me off.
the way i see it call your credit card company tell them its not as described.
they refunded him and i said that was one dealer i thought you would never have an issue with
some dealers forget where they started, and its things like this i do not like to see or hear about
so how is one supposed to buy a scope when there is no dealer around?
no returns for just looking through it that is pathetic and gives me a bad taste in my mouth

go here and read firsthand reviews about scopes. Go on Google and search reviews on the scope you think you want to buy. Pick out the best option and check prices with different dealers and Amazon. Buy the one you like. It isn’t brain surgery.
what good is reviews if you buy it and cant return it because it isn't as clear as adverted some people don't have 1000s to spend so yeah today it is brain surgery.

It is highly likely that shops have been burned on scope returns, and that has resulted in a blanket 'no return' policy which also snared you or your buddy. You can thank some unscrupulous previous customers for that policy, who may have abused a scope and then tried to return it.

With that being said however, was it stated above that we are talking about an Element Optics scope here? I have found these to be very clear in my use, at least equivalent (and most times slightly better) as compared to Hawke scopes, which I also use and like. Worst part about the Element scopes in my opinion is that they are heavy.

So with all of that said it would seem to me that you got a bad one, or one which had perhaps been damaged during shipment - either from the manufacturer to the distributor, the distributor to the shop or the shop to you. In any case it should have been covered by a manufacturer's warranty, even if the shop would not take it back for reasonable credit.

(Edit - Sounds like Struckat and I are thinking along the same lines).

I find it hard to believe, that IF it is an Element scope; it was bad. Did you first adjust the diopter ring and make sure the reticle is clear and pronounced? Then ensure what you're looking at it is within range on the objective adjustment? And are the lenses wiped and clear? You're not looking through see-through scope covers are you? Like everyone else says, if it's bad you should be able to contact Element and work the issue through them.

Don't be lured by some posters recommending some mongrel scope just because it's cheap. Stick with the most trusted brands and dealers who will stand by what they sell if you don't like the product. As some have said, I like Athlon, Arken, Sightron, Optisan. Not every model of these scopes I would use because of the reticle type, focal plane or other characteristics.

If its really that cloudy they should take it back. Amazon is good for optics, if you don't like it you return it no problem.

Well I have been a competitive pb shooter for 15 years longer than you, in fact just got done loading shells for a match on Sunday. Take any group of shooters and I will bet not 50 percent of them know how to adjust their scope properly, just saying.
