To remove rust I use oil on the rust then rub it off with steel wool. What type of air gun is it? If it is a spring piston air gun you don't want to use petroleum based oils such as regular gun oils on the inside because this can cause combustion when fired.
When done removing the rust clean out all the oil and properly lube the air gun depending on what type of air gun it is.

depends on how bad it is .. if its bad and actually worth saving i might try naval jelly, wire brushes, steel wool, and sandpaper then refinish everything with a good cold blue ...
