Need ideas/help finding a new scope

As you know, the close side focus in high mag FFP and high end glass is hard to find, at just $2000.

The NX8 is ok, not ATACR quality, but is also much cheaper so isn’t meant to be. I wish the Nexus had a higher mag, and I might would try it. I would probably look for a used March 5-40, as they would be around your $2000 budget. I have been tempted by one several times. Having not owned the March yet, I can’t confirm that it would be nicer than the NX8, but I would guess that it would be.

Ghostranger,

the combination of features you're asking for is very narrow. (I know, I have a very similar list. 😄)

Precisely because of that I made a Scope Specs List so I could see what's out there, and where I might have to compromise....

Some of the features you want are almost "self-contradictory" (no, I'm not critizicing your requirements, just pointing out we usually have to prioritize our requirements, otherwise we're trying to buy something that hasn't been invented yet...! 😄)

FFP

Fine reticle

Clean mil reticle -- not grid style ➔ Somehow very difficult, bec. most of the better, high mag, 10y, FFP, mil scopes in my Specs Table at least use a grid style, because these type of scopes seem to be targeted at PRS shooters, and they want a gridded reticle.

Reticle with center dot ➔ Now, that's pretty rare to find.

Turrets that track well

Large enough turrets to hold marking tape ➔ Seems like you'd want 10mil turrets (not 6mil/revolution), and those usually come with grid style reticles, for some reason....

10y parallax

Magnification for seeing .22-holes at 100y ➔ How old are you? (don't answer that...). Rather: How good are your eyes? Makes a BIG difference. I'm north of 50, and I can still do it with 18x magnification, if I use white paper in good lighting conditions, but 24x is really what I'd need....

The more compact/lightweight, the better ➔ Diametrically opposed to large magnification...

Extra super duper glass "quality" is lower priority

Budget $2000 ➔ Glory! 😄

🔴 OK, the Athlon Midas TAC 6-24x50 with the APRS2 reticle(!) seems to check your boxes, even the center dot without a grid, and the finer reticle (0.03mil). 26.3oz light.

Link to see the reticle: https://athlonoptics.com/product/midas-tac-6-24x50-aprs2-ffp-mil-scope/

🟠 There is a close second, the Element Titan 5-25x56 with the APR-1C reticle(!). Got the center dot without a grid. 39.0oz heavy though. 15y parallax.

🟠 There is a scope from Hi-Lux that has a little less magnification (20x), but checks the other boxes pretty well: The Hi-Lux Pentalux TAC-VF 4-20x50 FFP G2. Even with a 1moa center dot. An impressive 12mil per turret rotation. 27.9oz light.

My Scope Specs Table doesn't go up to your $2000 budget — I'm glad you can afford that. 👍🏼 But I'll attach it JIC.

It has links to videos and photos where you can see the FFP reticles at different magnifications.

Happy scope shopping! 😊

Matthias

I have a Crimson Trace 3 series and I think it ticks all your requirements... I'm loving the ten yards parallax, it's a Japan made scope and I they are discontinued, I bought mine during a huge discount from Midway USA. I'm going to do a video review about it and then sell it. If you are interested I can contact you directly before posting the Ad

One thing this scope might be missing is that is not lightweight but you said was less important

Ohh forgot to say I paid $500 for the scope, retail price was $1000 you can check if they have the new models with your specs in case you have any concerns about this model been discontinued

I'd extend the budget another $500 and find a used S&B PMII 5-25×56 with PF4 fine reticle. Focuses at 10M.

Super nice scopes that are only exceeded by ZCO, Tangent Theta, and Hensoldt. But these don't focus close.

March FX 5-40×56 is very nice too. I dislike the huge line marking numbers in the FML1 reticle personally.

The March 3-24 would work but make sure to get the 52mm objective. I think they offer a basic. 5 mil reticle as well.

Ghostranger,

since you specified your top end magnification as 18x or 20x being sufficient, well, good, that opens up more options. 👍🏼😊

🔶 Here's the Scope Specs Table, with the same requirements as the other, but for a magnification range of

▪4x or less on the bottom end, and

▪14x or more on the top end.

➔ The table has 14 scopes with 18x or more.

🔸 For example, the Sightmark Citadel 3-18x50 FFP with the MR2 reticle has a center dot, no grid. 26.1oz. Reticle lines 0.03mil thin.

😊👍🏼 Matthias

All the criteria you listed, including the center dot reticle goes back to the Nightforce NX8 in the MIL-C reticle. The reticle is a little busy outside of the center dot, but is great for measuring/ranging and clicking adjustments for the next shot. I have the NX8 4-32×50 in MOA and love the clarity, the parallax adjustment, and the dials, which all turn superior and smoother than anything else in this price range. If you are an MOA scope user like I was, dialing the scope to match the impact is based on the matching reticle, I have found, does not really matter if it is Mil or MOA when using the hash marks and dialing accordingly. Eurooptic has the best prices on them and the demo models are truly in like new condition, though you may have to wait for a demo MIL-C reticle from them.

Airgun-hobbyist,

Thanks for the recommendation and sharing your experience with the NF NX8. It seems like a VERY nice scope. I just don't like the looks of the MIL C (just my personal preferance). I REALLY WANT to like the MOAR F1 reticle, but it has a cross in the center instead of a dot and I'm used to mils anyway. I may extend my budget to look at some of the other NF scopes tho. Thanks again for taking the time to share

The new ones may be Phillipine made so likely not as good as the Japan made ones.

The Titan glass is JUNK.
