Hey, I have an employee who's been with us for 30 years and we'd like to send him out west for an awesome hunt. Thinking Montana for Elk but open to suggestions, we're in upstate NY. Anyone have something to suggest?
I’ve lived and hunted in Colorado for over 50 years. I was a big game guide on the King Mountain range and Dome Peak migratory route (between the towns of Topanas and Burns) from 1976-1983. Had a string of 12-16 horses during this period. The elk harvest in Colorado is without equal even today:
I refused more hunters than I accepted. It’s important to know how fit your friend is, how good of a shot he is and what year he wants to hunt since most of the better elk hunting areas you need to draw a tag to hunt (lottery system of sorts). Some of the better guides $$$ have limited tags from nearby ranchers that are given “elk pesting permits” from DOW (Division Of Wildlife) and will pass these on to hunters eliminating the draw or OTC (Over The Counter) purchase. I’m no longer a guide and all the good guides I knew are either retired or dead. Feel free to pm me and I’ll try to fill in the blanks and answer your questions
@jeffdodge Also, depending on what part of Montana you go to I might be able to help. My very close friends live in the Flathead Valley for the last 30 years, wife is a native. So I am sure they know someone, and I know some people with connections in Bozeman and the Butte area.
