need advice on Crosman 1077, new to me

Pics forthcoming, I bought several air rifles at a local flea market a few days ago, including a synthetic stocked Crosman 1077. It appears to be in good condition but missing the complete clip and magazine. MY QUESTION ... Can I insert a fresh CO2 cartridge and test fire it as is (no clip & magazine) before I purchase the missing parts? I don't want to damage the gun, but also don't want to spend $30 for the parts if the gun is no good. Thanks.

Thanks, I'll take your word for it. I had been wanting a Ruger 10-22 style rifle, and still plan to buy an Umarex version. I wish I still had the two Ruger 10-22 rifles I had back in the 1970s. They sold for $88.88 at Woolworth back then. Now they retail for about $300.
I bought an armload (5 or 6) guns from the same seller at the flea market.
One was a pistol, a Classic 1377 that shoots well but needs rebluing.
If the 1077 appears to function I will order the magazine & clip(s) for it.
Any other tips and/or comments on the Crosman 1077 are welcome.
