N50 Cards with RAW .22 HP and Anschutz 64 MPR

It was windy today. Weather Channel said 10-20 MPH where I was shooting ( my local outdoor range), but the Kestrel doesn't lie. I marked the Kestrel wind conditions on the cards and had two flags out today. Wind was swirling and hard to figure out my holds. Shot the JSB 25G RDs. Gun had a clean barrel and is very accurate, but not me!

This was the RAW .22 HP today. Had a tough time judging wind.

This was the Safari from this past Tuesday in less wind, shooting the JSB 25g KO's around 940 FPS

This was today shooting the Anschutz 64 MPR, a solid .22 LR. Shooting with an Accu-Tac and a good rear rest. Tried Eley 40g ( red box ) and I was happy with the results, because I almost always shoot Lapua Center-X. Guess I am going to buy some more Eley. This gun also shoots the Match Eley ( black box ) even better.

Great shooting in those winds!!!!

Thanks Steve.

Actually, I’m noticing Weather Channel ( 10-20 mph) over exaggerates the wind speeds at my range. So, I took the Kestrel wind meter out and I test a few feet from the bench ( 1st flag); and also near 2nd flag at around 35-40 yards. The Kestrel ranged from 3-8/10 mph at times.

The Anschutz 40g bullets always buck the wind better as evidenced by my RAW card.

Please discuss your RAW .22 HP. Pictures of it would be cool as well. It's tough to look at it in your thumbnail/avatar.

Terry, here you go. PM me with your questions and we can always hop on a call and discuss.

Martin built this for me a couple of years ago ( purchased from Ken at SPAW ); and I have it set up shooting the JSB 25g Redesigns at around 935 FPS. I have experimented with the HST and have gone up to 955 FPS, but the sweet spot for me at both 50 and 100 yards is around 935 FPS. I use it exclusively for bench rest and I can't imagine ever selling it. I have tried slugs, but they were not accurate for me with the Poly barrel. I really didn't explore all the slug/weight possibilities either.

If I had any solid tuning skills ( which I don't) I could probably make it better, but I'm not sure how much better it could shoot candidly. Very accurate at both 50 yards and I would say 'can be' very accurate at 100 yards with a very light wind day. I have the trigger release around 6-7 OZ, which is perfect for me.

That’s a beautiful RAW most definitely. Swirling winds are so hard to figure out, I think that’s very good shooting Tommy. I foolishly sold my RAW to AZ’s neighbor a couple years ago. Big regrets.

Hey Dave, thanks!

Martin can build you a brand new RAW, so you can use that big “tax refund” to spoil yourself. 😀😀

No surprise, but the 40g bullets in the Anschutz do much better in wind than the 25g RD pellets. When I look at those N50 top shooters, they really know how to read the wind. Definitely not intuitive, but some of those guys shooting air rifles can really post some extraordinary scores.

This is good link Joe F sent to me a while back. Doug has some interesting observations about wind reading.
