N50 Benchrest League. How to be competitive with slugs?

From what I understand there are three categories:
Pellet
sportsman
and Pro.
Pellet is only for air rifles, cal .177 to cal .30, is qualified with plug .35 "
Sportsman (commercial rifles) is for air rifles with slugs and rimfires, air rifles cal .177 to cal .30, rimfire .22 is rated with plug .35 "
Pro (custom-made)air rifles cal .177 and .22, rimfire (custom-made) cal .22, is qualified with plug .224 ".

As I read in this forum, a person can participate with the same rifle in the three categories, in this case it would have to be a .22 caliber air rifle.

In the sportsman category (and pro), how can I be competitive with commercial slugs against rimfire?
What slugs should I use? at what speed?
or is this information part of the competition?

Jorge,

Thats a tough question. I’ve only seen a few n50 cards shot with factory slugs.

I talked with a guy from FX (Justin Welch) about the best setup for slugs and N50 and he sent me this.

“Huma v2 transfer port (if pre m3)
Pin probe
Slug power kit (if pre m3)
superior heavy liner for set up

The tunes are tuff for 50y accuracy
I’ve found that the 800’s FPS are good for 50y accuracy with most slugs. But if they want good bc they need to push them 970+ to get the good bc. But if it’s just for 50y targets keep it in the 800s

.25 is the 34g Varmint knocker
.22 is the 31.2g NSA
.30 is the hybrids and the 49.5 nsa “

Please note that I know absolutely nothing about FX guns and this is coming from Justin.

I have not yet seen any card shot with a Setup like this. To keep up with a good factory Rimfire and a good shooter, you will need to shoot 247 plus fairly consistently.

Please let us know if you have a chance to try this out.

Thank you very much Mike, it is an excellent starting point. I have everything Justin Welch says for the Impact, the Huma slug kit and the superior heavy liner.
I am going to buy some cans of slugs to make some targets and as soon as I have results I will publish them.
It is very interesting to use 800 fps for precision, it is something that I did not know.
If you can't get commercial slugs that compete with rimfire, this category will not have many participants with air rifles, only that the JSB MRD's can do their part.

Regards

As I have been reviewing the N50 cards and match results, I have seen precious few AG shooters consistently shoot high 240’s. I’m not being negative, just acknowledging how difficult it is to achieve these types of scores and “ CONSISTENTLY.”

The best shooters can do it certainly, and hopefully more of us newer Nat 50 enthusiasts will get there. I’m focused on this as a goal to “shoot for” in 2021.

Tom, I think the same as you, my goal is to be at 240 or more this year, one of my big doubts is if with commercial slugs we can get any advantage over pellets at 50y. I think the only way to find out is by testing.
Just today I have printed some test targets of the N50 to see how it goes. I'm going to try the JSB MRD's and the 23g NSA slugs that are the only ones I have now, I hope until tomorrow to have some results.

Shooting 247 consistently as Mike says is a dream for now but here we go!
It will be when I can convince him to sell me a Thomas rifle..... lol!

I will add this personal experience with shooting the Red Wolf .22 cal high power with both MRDs and Knock Out slugs with NAT 50 cards. On several saved cards, my scoring was 7 ++ points higher with the slugs at 50 yards vs. with MRD pellets. So, with my rifle, the KO’s out performed the best pellet for the RW - at 50 yards. You are right - you need to test for yourself.

However, at 100 yards the MRDs did slightly better than those same Knock Outs in scoring the 100 yard EBR targets. I know this odd and it surprised me also, but I think my 940 FPS velocity with the slugs may have been too slow.

Tom:

It is very good, this means that the KO slugs perform well at 50y. This is very important data for the N50

That at 100y the MRD are better is a topic that has been discussed a lot and one of the conclusions has to do with the twist rate of the barrel and obviously with the speed of the pellet.
But I don't have much knowledge about this.

I have an Impact with two barrels, one 1:24 and the other 1:16 , I'm going to try both. Unfortunately I not have a 100y range close to my house.

Mike, Jorge

Here is a data point from one NAT 50 enthusiast. Mike - I finally pulled out my previously shot N50 official cards, and re-scored them with the correct .035” scoring plug. These cards have all been previously posted by me in other N50 posts. I save all my cards and can repost the revised scoring from today if anyone has interest.

As it happens, I actually did shoot a total of five cards with the Safari and 25g Knock Out slugs on medium power at 945fps. With the revised scoring, I went up in score from 5-8 points per card. 240-6x, 242-8X, 243-6X, 243-8x, 248-9X. If you recall, you indicated to me In previous posts that I inadvertently scored them incorrectly, which I did. Most of these were shot without flags due to forgetting to load in the truck.

So, once I mend/heal with the new knee; and can get back out to the range and use my new Wicks dual vane flags, I will try this again using the better flags.

I will be curious to see others results with AG and slugs vs. a good pellet like the MRD. FWIW - I believe I can shoot better with the MRD, but thus far the slugs do better.

Hello Tom:
They are very good results, it is an average of 243 per target, and you have one of 248! excellent.
The most important thing is that with slugs you are having a good result that means that the sportsman category is well done.
We have to keep testing other brands and weights of slugs until we find the right one for each rifle / barrel. It seems that you already found yours

Hello:

Two targets today, one 247 with the MRD´s at 950 fps, some wind in the yard, this is my first N50 target.

The second one is 249, cero wind, with JSB 18,13 5.53 at 930 fps, same barrel, FX Superior Standar 1:24 , 600 mm

I dealt with the 23g NSA slugs, very bad with this barrel, many flyres, I didn't even hit a target anymore

I already bought a 600 mm barrel for slugs (superior Heavy liner, twist rate 1:16)

Sorry for the quality of the targuets I printed them on a very thin paper and glued them to a box of pizza .... lol
