My Yong Heng Experience, Part 1

I am a newbie to the air gunning experience, but not to firearms. Have been shooting since age 7, which was 59 years ago. Drafted in '71 and got to shoot a lot for over a year. :(

I have no place near me that is capable of filling a high pressure air tank. I thought my scuba shop could, but their max is 3500. There is a paintball place near me but only open sometimes on Saturday, and then it's hit and miss. So I decided to go the Great White and compressor route.

I studied, researched, went on this site and others, talked to Rob where I ordered my bottle, etc. I finally ended up trying to choose between a refurbished Air Venturi 4500 and the Yong Heng. My wallet cried out YONG HENG! and that's what won out since I'm saving for an Edgun Matador.

Ordered the auto shut-off version Yong Heng from Amazon ($349.99) and got it in two days. I also bought the $45 2-year full warranty on it as well as an upgraded water pump (for $13.99). I got it last Tuesday and it was packed really well. I let it sit in the box since I had no real spare time last week. Yesterday unboxed it, put the Royal Purple in it, and that's all I had time for.

  1. Today ran it for the obligatory 15 minutes as a break-in, then changed the oil. Yes, it is loud, but not all that bad. I've heard louder.
  2. Got a 5-gallon bucket, filled 3/4 with cold water, the rest with ice.
  3. Put the bucket and pump on the cement garage floor so they are on the same level.
  4. Set the auto-shutoff to 4000 psi
  5. Hooked it up to my new Great White which was never filled, it was definitely on zero.
  6. Turned it on.
  7. Piddled around and kept checking the temp. It was running about 48C
  8. Stayed around in the garage for 1/2 hour and all seemed fine so went inside.
  9. Then it got really quiet.
  10. Went back out, compressor power on but not running.
  11. It had overheated (the motor, not the cylinders)
  12. Let it sit for 1/2 hour
  13. Restarted, ran fine
  14. Ran 1/2 hour and I turned it off for 1/2 hour
  15. Ended up cycling if 2 more times.
  16. Filled to 4500 no problems. Overall with breaks it took about 3 hours.

If you follow the helps and hints you find online, like not opening your bottle before achieving equalized pressure between tank and hose, it's a fine albeit fairly loud, compressor. I'm going to put some foam under it to try to dampen the noise.

I know this is my very first impression, but for me and the amount I shoot, if it lasts it's going to be just fine. The last fill was from 3000 to 4500 and it took all of 12 minutes. :)

If it breaks in the next two years, I have a no-hassle warranty.

I will post a Part 2 if anything happens.

I hope you're not stopping and restarting the compressor. It can damage it. Each time your stop it to let it rest or cool down. You need to bleed it. Most people do not know this and will stop their compressor with air still in the line. Then they will power it back on and cry when the compressor doesnt turn on or will make humming and weird sounds but not pumping air. Always bleed after a stop. Aka always start the compressor with no load. Meaning no air in the lines.

Yes, I was manually shutting it down, bleeding it, then allowing the pressure in the hose/compressor to match the tank pressure before opening the tank valve.

@Redick and @Long_Gun_Dalla, what secondary filter do you suggest? There are the big "gold" ones out there with the tampon like filling and others with the tampon/desiccant/charcoal filling?

Thanks for the tip on the water wetter!

I've been using a gold filter that come with a mounting bracket. They're on ebay and ali, just a bit tricky to actually find with the search engine. It's a cyclonic charcoal filter that sits upright. It has a drain spout, I'll bleed it once in the middle of my 9 litre top off (while still running) and again when it's done.

I got the filter because I couldn't find another with a drain spout anywhere near that price point ($100). There's an air tank and compressor vendor that sells filter setups that are completely over the top that have a drain like mine. But the price will have you bewildered. Anyhow, I also run the cotton filter it came with after the large one. It's always bone dry.
