Ok everybody, this is my “review” of the Gamo Urban. Just a quick recap for those of you who may not know: Sept. 29th was my birthday. I was blessed with a .22cal Gamo Urban (GU for now on) from my cousin and her sisters. It was not a choice of my choosing. I wanted a HW50 but it was $36 over my allotted $300 and I didn’t want to push my luck by asking for more. I did not want a Benjamin unless it was a marauder and I have seen some bad reviews on the gauntlet. The GU was/is made in the UK and a cold hammer forged barrel. Win win in my book. Well today, I took possession of the FedEx brown box. Oh yeah, just some quick background. I am a springer man meaning that I shoot springers and springers only. Not that I have something against pcp’s but I like the simplicity of a springer. Rifle and pellets that is all I need. Yeah a spring can break but it will still shoot and the poi isn’t too affected, from my experience anyway. Pcp’s…well as we all know, one needs a fill source, a hose, and you may have to watch your air pressure or you may fall out of the sweet spot. O-rings get lost and yada yada yada. In addition, I love the disciple that it takes to shoot a springer as to PCP’s. Yeah it is probably nice to just point and shoot without the artillery hold and what not. Yeah the power is not equivalent to a pcp nor is the range but nonetheless I love springers.
Now honestly this is not my 1st pcp as some of you may believe. It’s my 3rd and a quick bio on that. Long ago in my springer infancy I was able to buy an AZ tuned BSA super 10 from JIPA. Accurate as all hell…for two magazines. Why only two? I had no way to refill it. I know, I know, why would I get it w/o a fill source? Dummy move on my part. I traded it for a CZ 452 military trainer. Later on down the road, I was offered a Hasan AT44 w/pump for $100. Good deal right? It and the pump worked as it should. God awful loud and I f**ked up the pump somehow. It would not even move up or down. I do not know if I bent, broke or overheated it and honestly, pumping those few times was a PITA so I sold it for a couple bricks of 22lr ammo. Ok now onto my review. Basically, my total amount of time with both rifles combined??? Say 6hrs…literally.
Ok, I got the brown box today and when I picked it up (the box), it was super light. Cut the box open and there was the white Gamo box. No type of packing material. Opened the white gamo box and there was a another brown box…again, no packing material. Opened the last box and inside a clear plastic sock was the urban. Now I don’t know about you and I hope that no one takes offense and I am not criticizing but when I think of gamo I think of Walmart. Sorry Gamo owners. There was a small ziplock bag of silicone grease and there were two small, I mean very small o rings which I would assume are the bolt or the probe that pushes the pellet. I say were because I lost em already.
LOOKS: Dude there is a giant pickle on the end. I guess it is a moderator that is permanently attached and it looks so bulbous like it doesn’t belong. It looks or reminds me of a toy gun. The gauge is unreadable. If it wasn’t for the colors of green and red I wouldn’t know what is what. You can’t read the numbers or words or whatever is on there. Then there is this green rubber band thing between the recoil pad and stock. Whatever it is it’s removable. The safety reminds me of the crosman springers which reminds me of…cheap. I like to look of the magazine well. It slides right into the rifle and doesn’t protrude above the dovetail rail. It is under it so you could put low mounts or a one piece, which is a plus to and for me.
FEEL: She is light because it is. I am used to wood and springers. My prosport is a walnut stock with a 4-16 AMX SF Hawke and she isn’t light. I have a 54 Air King and those who shot or held one know they are far from light and lastly I have a RX2 in a laminated stock and she is far from a skinny super model. But this urban which now has a beat up but still functional CP 4-16 mildot (and those center points are not light) atop of it, is still light IMO. I can actually hold it with one hand a kinda steady to boot. It has a synthetic stock and honestly it doesn’t feel cheap. The handle, which has the thumbhole opening, and the butt stock are hollow but doesn’t feel weak. The pistol grip and forearm have some type of texturing which feels pretty good and makes me feel more confident when gripping. The magazine well has some type of magnet, which keeps the magazine in its place. I would prefer some type of click catch and a button or something to release it. However, it works for now I guess. Dude, the bolt…WTF. It is super stiff and kinda hard to cock. Now I am not weak by any means but for something so small, one wouldn’t think that it would take the amount of effort it does to pull back to cock it and to decock it. One of the things I found weird it that my LOP is 13.25”-13.5” and for such a short rifle its LOP is probably about 14-14.4”. Oh and the fill port. Its not one of the QD kinds but the long probe. I feel that they all should be the QD or foster or whatever they’re called. Trigger? Horrible. They say its 2 stage but I only seen 1 allen key adjustment and that was in the trigger itself. From the manual the 2nd stage is adjusted via phillips head screw, WTF? 1st stage is a long pull. I am ok with that. The mushiness/creep from 1st to 2nd is long as well. No glass rod breaking. No definitive stop. I tried to take the stock off to see if there was something else by the trigger and I removed 2 screws and still couldn’t get the stock off. Don’t know why. Or maybe I should read the rest of the manual.
SHOOTING: Well I only shot it 12 times with some old CP domes 14gr. and at 20yds well lets say the cold hammer forged barrel showed promise. Now 20yds isn’t nothing nowadays and there are a lot more pellets out there that are just a better pellet. I have some JSB’s 18gr but didn’t try em yet because I got the CP’s zero’d and want to be able to down something if and when the time comes. And since I don’t have a pump or some type of fill source then I would literally be S.O.L if I shoot it down past its good zone or whatever its called. And the shot report quietness is nothing to brag about. My prosport is about the same. Maybe just a tad quieter. When I did shoot it there is a loud ping noise coming from the action
All in all I got to keep in mind that it’s a $300+/- pcp. Its not a FX or Daystate or even a marauder but for a person who may want to venture into pcp’s or someone who don’t got a bunch of coin to drop, maybe it’s for them. Honestly, I give it a thumbs down so far. Maybe if/when I get a pump or tank, I’ll stretch her legs out to 50 and 75yds and upon satisfactory or better accuracy, I would change my mind. I truly don’t care about looks of a rifle. Like everybody says the prosports are beautiful. Not me, I think the HW77 or 97 looks way better. But I LOVE accuracy and my PS has it. Better example is my 54…hideous as all hell but just as accurate as it is ugly. So what I am saying is that I could care less about the GU’s looks so as long as it can out shoot my PS or Air King then I will be more accepting. But I do want the trigger to be situated as well as the horrible bolt action and its hard to cock feeling. Well that is all for now and hopefully at a match fellow pcp shooters will chime in and/or help me get the rifle situated. Sorry for this being so winded but just wanted to give you my view.
