Certainly not good. Have not seen that with mine, which is over 2 years old now. Putting the return line above water surface allows you to see the return flow at a glance and possibly save damage if a pump fails. I agree with above that more pump can't flow more water and that stock pump is adequate (inlet/outlet restrictions) but disagree on the ice. I use only about 2 gallons of water with lots of ice and run in upper 40's consistently (also running a squirrel cage fan). More water might work better for the same result but a smaller reservoir is easier to handle.
