My NEW Taipan Veteran is inconsistent...

To Mink did you see my shot string?? I think the problem is the regulator. All what I did was I cleaned all whasers inside the regulator and put together reduce a bit pressure on the regulator. The result is clearly see on my second shot string.

I did see your shot string, thanks for that. My thought though is that because the gun is so new, and given the reputation of the reliability of the gun, I would prefer to get a replacement regulator etc. while it’s still under warranty. Rather than hacking around myself as I don’t have any experience tinkering with these things.

I was not impressed too when I received veteran... I have 7 yeras experience with the cricket so I think there is set the regulator too high.

Obviously, whether the reg is too high depends on your desired tune. I have bought two Veterans from Tony, and both were perfect. My last one arrived shooting the 18 at 900. I got slightly better accuracy when I slowed it a bit, and I think it's around 885 now. If he dials back the reg, he might be near the max on HST to reach the desired velocity, so I'm not sure you can conclude the reg is set too high, although it is possible. I wanted a little room to go up in velocity with hammer spring adjustment, shot count is good, and the rifle sounds perfect. I have no idea what the set point is, but from shooting it down, I believe it's around 125-130. Mink's rifle is a Long, mine is a Standard, so I assume the set point would be higher, as most owners of a Long will be looking for more velocity.

You are right it depends on desired velocity. But if Mink wants to use 870fps he must lowered reg to get better consistency. Now is not adequate vocity to pressure of regulator. I would try higher speed let's say 950fps and shot string will improve.

@octavius @elh0102 you bring up interesting points. Tony’s shot string that he sent with the gun is a consistent ~985 fps with JSB 18.1s. I found this to yield unsatisfactory accuracy and mediocre shot count, so I reduced HST to 880 fps. So maybe the reg pressure is set too high.

But can someone explain why having too high reg pressure for a given HST tune would yield such inconvenient velocities?

Also, because I’m using a hand pump I am not overly excited about repeatedly degassing, disassembling, tightening reg screw, reassembling, fill air from 0psi, test consistency, repeat repeat etc.

If you don't have consensus between hts and regulator pressure you always got those strange numbers. It's easy if you set weak hst and high pressure on regul hammer never open the valve in same it does mean you get inconsistent result. Hammer doesn't have enough power open the valve always the same. If you are intended to use 880 - 900fps you will need definitely go lower with reg pressure to approx 120bar... IMO 😉

Have you shot string from Tony? Post it here to compare.

hmm something is different... Less expensive method should be really try different pellets for example try 16grains pellet. Test just consistency doesn't matter for accuracy now. If you found big spread also with a 16grains pellets I suspect the regulator or hammer. Remove back brass power knob remove spring and check if everything looks good. Don't spray any lube on hammer. Carefully everything put back and try test again.

Similar situation. I just got my Veteran but in .177. Not very accurate out of the box @25 yds. Setup the chrono and it was hi, low, hi, low. Looked at the shot string from Tony and it was also hi,low,hi,low... i lowered the hammer spring significantly and it is much more consistent now. ES of maybe 5 compared to 35-40 before, but want to shoot heavier pellets and faster. just ordered a huma regulator.
