I dissagree with the OP for a couple reasons.
Firstly: I LOVE TO TINKER. To me it's more than half the fun of airgunning. For those that have firearms, you know what I mean when I say that airguns are waaay more tinkerable than firearms, although the AR platform comes dang close. And firearms are where I came from before this airgunning thing, as did I think most of you guys too. So you know what I mean here. Now, I'm not gonna buy some $1500 to $3000 platform just to tinker. Makes about as much sense as buying a Maserati and tearing it down to .....whatever.
Secondly: I like to build my own stuff (kinda goes hand in hand with the tinker thing). I have many airguns that I built from the ground up using some "on the market" parts and some parts that I made. Why? Just wanted to see if I could hit a certain performance level. In most cases, I got what I was after.
I do agree that it is cheaper to buy what you want to begin with, but by building it myself, doing the research, sourcing the parts or making my own, I KNOW the machine inside and out.
I would challenge anyone to fix a Daystate or any of the Maserati guns as fast as I can fix my stuff, on the bench or in the field. My stuff may not be as reliable, but it is infinately easier to work on and ALL guns will break eventually. Do I keep a lot of spares in stock? Yup. Thats part of it. And, in the end I realize that I've spent about as much on one of my customs as I would have on a Maserati gun...well, maybe not quite as much.
FWIW
