My Brain Hurts - what gun to get?

Pardon my ignorance but im new to Air guns, air rifle's, BB gun, Pellet gun etc.... whatever the proper term is. I shoot AR's and a .357 mag normally. I want to get into this game to take care of some varmints in my back yard and have some cheaper ammo fun plinking around.

My ideal set up is a PCP with a clip that has a bolt action style. I was looking hard at the benjamin discovery .22 but I realized there is no clip, and it has a different/more expensive tank than a SCUBA one?

I've watched endless Youtube videos and im sick of people talking and not getting to the point's, so i came here for more direct answers.

again, ideal setup: Clip + PCP (i believe) with a decent price tag, im not trying to break the bank but I have some dough to spend. I'll buy another AR if were getting into that deep of water tho, so please any advice would be greatly appreciated!

do pcp's usualy take 100+ pumps to shoot? that seems like a lot of time/energy to shoot a few rounds, just a side note but curious if their all that long of a "recharge"

Welcome!
This question comes up a lot. In order to give you the best advise we generally will ask a few more questions such as...
Budget +/-
What is your plan for refilling a PCP?
What type of Varmints?
Is noise level a concern?
Size? Standard rifle size or something a little/lot smaller?
This will give us a baseline to work off of and we'll be able to steer you towards a few choices to suit your needs.
You mentioned SCUBA. Do you have a tank and a way to fill it?
As far as shots between fill ups, most full size rifles are getting around 40 consistent shots. Of course this varies from rifle to rifle.

This can be very addicting... Are you ready? lol! :)

The Benjamin Marauder is the best bang for the buck on an entry level PCP with a 10 round magazine.

As Jason said, the Benjamin Marauder pistol is a great alternative , but I like them with a butt stock
This would probably be the way to go if you are hand pumping. Comes with 8 round magazine

http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Benjamin_Marauder_Air_Pistol_AR15_Stock/3511

Then you'll need a hand pump till you decide to get a tank and fill assy.

I would recommend the Hill.

Best of luck on your decisions.

"NMshooter"You also may look at the Bejamin Maximus which I believe is esentially the Discovery with a magazine. Like the Discovery, if you have only a pump to fill, it may be a better choice.
Thanks Doc, I knew there was something new out there like that but couldn't remember the name? LOL
I agree with you wholeheartedly on that one! Wait....I just googled it....says single shot?

http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Benjamin_Maximus_Air_Rifle/3910

I know there is one like it with a magazine but can't for the life of me remember what it is?

OK...I'm googling as I type...

Try the Mrodair Airmax Varmint PCP.....that's the one with the magazine

Sounds like a deal?

What kind of varmints are you trying to hunt and at what distances? I have found my little .22 prod is great to hunt game as large as 15 pound jack rabbits and is very fun and cheap to plink with in the back yard. Very accurate on game under 35 yards. My prod is far from stock but its a lot fun to up grade.
In my option, I think this set up is great for hunting because its easier to shoot free hand or with a rest, very light, very adjustable to suit your body, tons of after market parts, and is very short to hunt with. Depending on your budget, you can buy every after market part you may need all at once or you can buy one small part at a time. By far the best up grade for this gun will be a MM barrel.
I made a short video plinking with my prod out to 75 yards:

The Disco or Maximus really opens the door for a scuba tank fill, a 3000 lb fill on a 88cu/ft tank will do 60 or 80 plus fills at 2k down to 1k. hand pumping is also an easy option. The original Disco was introduced in 08, and many options-mods were available The single shot will get you thru, BNM makes a multi shot breech. It's action is smoother than the Marauder IMHO. Both use the marauder mags I picked up a fully modded with every option used gun for less than the price of the breech kit. Additional breech parts will reasonably allow you to change out calibers. Trigger mods will take you from around 7lbs easily to ounces, or you can opt for the Gen1 marauder trigger with the necessary shim. Normand of DiscosRus was a wealth of info and a pleasure to deal with. Refurb guns I got from him 3 years ago are still holding pressure. I would not shy away from any refurb Crosman product.Good luck in your choice

I have both the Maximus in 22 cal and the Marauder in 25 cal, a quick comparison.
In stock trim the Maximus is louder due to the lack of any factory moderator or baffles.
A product from TKO22.com can be purchased which make is more quiet than the Marauder.
In stock trim the Marauder has a much better trigger.
A product can be purchased from Alliancehobby.com which provides a brass trigger, new spring, and two adjustment screws; which greatly improves the trigger
In stock trim it is much easier to pump up the Maximus to 2000 pounds, than the roughly 3000 pounds required by the Marauder.
In stock trim, both are quite accurate; I am talking a single wallowed hole at 25 yards accurate.
In stock trim the Marauder is more powerful.
In stock trim the Maximus is single shot bolt action, the Marauder is a rotary magazine bolt action.
Some people have purchased a new breech for the Maximus to support magazines.
If you are a tinkerer, and like to modify things; my money is on the Marauder. It has more purchasable add-ons to really make significant differences.

May I recommend looking at AOA's specials page. The Brocock Concept Standard is only $395 right now. That model has the male foster fill adapter on the gun, 6 shot magazine. Should be very accurate. Just ordered one myself. Also 2 yr Warrenty. Hard deal to beat. Heck I have lost that much buying a $2000.00 gun that I decided just wasn't for me when I resold it. Good Luck on your 1st Airgun

Go to the Pyramyd Air website.

Search for PCP rifles.

Select the "repeater" filter to remove all single shot guns.

Select "organize by price low to high"

And this will show you your options. They start at $450-$500

If you want to avoid pumping, and don't want to spend extra cash, buy a a used 4500psi scba tank and get it filled at a dive shop, paintball store or firefighters supply store.

The Gamo Coyote is a good option. So is the Marauder rifle or the Hatsan AT44.

ok my ignorance is coming through once again; had no idea these guns required a special pump, i thought a bike pump was going to do the trick (Lol @ myself), also saw a video of a guy doing 130 pumps to get his charged up for 20 shots or so, not sure if thats quite my speed. Im not trying to go Pro w/ this hobby haha, i respect what some of you do tho, pretty sick rigs you got there. I think I may be taking a step back from the PCP.

Can anyone give me the quick pro/con of other types ? break barrel vs pumper?

Break barrel shoves a spring back to fire, right? pump is similar to PCP (hardly at all, just the pressure of air), right?

I think my range is around 30 yards or so, backyard is about 1/4 acre. I do live near some mountain area/foothills and its rather rural, i aspire to drive out and tinker around at targets. I do want to feel somewhat "sniperish" (haha) so ideally i'd get a nice scope/clip/bolt action. does this set up exist on pump or break barrel's?

sorry for the general questions/responses, but thanks a bunch!

(love the wood stock look)

and i see some of you use a pistol with a buttstock, does that reduce your distance by a bunch?

thanks again for the timely responses; you guys r on it!

I'd also like to maybe nab a few birds, from what i read .22 is the way to go? .177 game runs away sometimes(?)

It really boils down to the money you want to spend?
I've had springers. I've had cheap springers and I've had expensive springers. If I had it to do over again I would have skipped the cheap springers.
If you decide to go Springer .....look at the Air Arms TX200 , or Weihrauch HW97K, Weihrauch HW95, or Beeman R-9. Can't go wrong there and should have plenty of power for anything you need.
If you prefer a low power accurate springer get the Beeman R-7 or the Weihrauch HW30, or the Weihrauch HW 50

For the best info on these guns go to straight shooters

I picked the Air Arms TX200 for this example

Our take.......gives you the best information you could ask for on any of their rifles. It is super helpful and I wish all companies did this!

I started with cheap springers to expensive springers to not so cheap pcp to expensive pcp
Once I went to PCP I didn't look back.

Now if you don't want the hassle of tanks and fill equipment I would suggest the FX Independence.
It is a self contained PCP.
We have a guy in our FT club who shoots some of the highest scores in Hunter division with his .177 FX Independence.
Pumps it 8 times for 4 high power shots!

Haha, my brain is starting to hurt to??? LOL ..That's about all I got for ya today ;-)

oh and For cheap springers Kenny does a great job reviewing them
