My blinged out .177 m-rod that I (was) going to use for field target

. . . due to covid restrictions locally - it ain't gonna happen and I'm not serious enough about it to be traveling 2 and/or 3 hours away to places where they are shooting. {sigh}

So: I've got this thing shooting *really* well at about 17 ft/lbs ( 875 fps ) with AA 10.34g pellets. I've got a huma in it dialed way down - it's around 90 - 95? ( It's been a long time since I built it and put that reg in it - I forget exactly where it is but it's low and I'm not really going to get any more power out of it at the current setting anyway ) This little gun is fun to shoot and its ridiculously accurate to boot.

On one hand I'm inclined to leave it here -- it'll be good for under 45 yard sniping on small critters, shooting around barns at sparrows, pigeons, rats, chipmunks, squirrels, etc . . . . so long as I stay w/in 45 yards. I shot it a bit earlier this evening just because - well -- because I haven't in a while. It's a fun one to shoot - it's light ( aluminum air tube as opposed to stock steel one which weighs a ton ), the trigger is light and crisp, I've got the cocking bolt light and easy to pull . . . it's a fun plinker. It's kind of hilarious though when shooting at targets earlier this evening out at 52'ish yards and I can actually see the pellets flying. I can't see the 25g slugs coming out of my .22 Vet Long at that same target board ( the one at 52 ) - no - they're going closer to 1000 fps and hitting a lot harder. ( lol )

*** IF *** I decide to throttle it up ( I've got a boatload of sorted AA 10.3g pellets ) then what have you guys seen / experienced for top speeds with this weight pellet (either the JSB or the AA's ) while retaining good accuracy? I'm not expecting to get 100 yard accuracy / power out of it (lol) BUT I know with just a little bit of adjustment on the huma and some dinking with the hammer spring I can get some more "zing" out of it and turn it into a little beastie - get it up into low to mid 20's ft/lbs and a make it a little more lethal out at 50, 60 - even 70'ish yards? ( still just small things - I'm not going to try and take out wood chucks or anything like that - not with this gun - squirrels and rabbits be about the biggest ).

BTW- BUDS GUNSHOP (not to be confused with BudK the Alpha6 scope place) usually sells those 10.5gr 1250 count brown box Crosman Premiers regular price $19.00 plus shipping and have been out so long their warehouse person referred me to order in bulk qty direct from Crosman and hooked me up for special pricing privileges thru them based on sheer quantity purchased.

I ordered direct from Crosman twice but the minimum order for dealer pricing is rather substantial.

Jim, the gun just oozes FT podium wins.
IMO, you’ve gone to a huge amount off effort (And money), why not “save” it for when you are up to a match?
It doesn’t have to shoot 20fpe to be accurate. Mine shoots just over 17fpe and shoots a 1-1/2” 10 shot groups @ 55 yards. Yours should too.

don’t let the travel time discourage you. Go have some fun!! We drive from two to five hours to shoot a match once to twice a month.

stick with the JSB or AA 10.34. I found a balance of shot count and consistency was around 890 and a reg setting of 100 bar.
Only 1 shooter at the FT Nats last year shot CP’s.
A single shot tray will help tighten up you groups. Besides, you only take two shots per target.
best of luck and keep us up to date on your successes.

The Ultra Mags in the 500 count mixed lot batch tins aren't as accurate at 100 yards as the 1250 count Brown Boxed versions which are made from the same die though. They are OK for informal plinking at up to 50 yards. Past that there comes the well known Crosman ammo fliers.

One of my unregulated Gen1 Marauders and my new Field and Target edition shoots lights out SUB half inch at 50 yards with them and my Gen1 unregulated FX Royale shooting at 1000fps (YUP) does 1/4-5/16" at 50 yards with those. My 177 CareerII 707 can get moa at 100 yards at 1055fps (YEP) with them too. Hadn't shot my 177 Sumatra at 100 enough to give an accurate assessment but it keyholes at 50 as long as it stays below 1055fps.

Many other 177s can't do too well at 100 yards unless they got the power.

Man that sounds cool! Would love to see pics of your 100 yard range and those .177 groups.

I'd leave it FT ready. The sport isn't dead. For most FT shooters 2-3 hours drive time is normal. In more spread out areas of the country it's more. I sent an email to the match director as there may be a match in Salem this weekend. Otherwise make your way to the Dutchess County Pistol Association in Wappinger Falls on the 23rd. I can guarantee you'll be so keyed into the match the drive time goes unnoticed on the way their. On the way back you'll be thinking about what you'll do different next time and suddenly you're pulling in the driveway. I'll be at both matches if you're looking for someone familiar. I'll even squad with you if you like.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. ( I'm getting killed here @work today . . . !! Grrrrrrrrr . . . . lol )

@Lewis - Craftsman.vit ( one of this sites sponsors I think? Adverts that scroll by along the top of the site ) "Accidental" (lol) impulse purchase. Did I "need" a stock? No. When I saw it did I "have" to have it?? :) :) :) lol!!

@davecole & @john_in_ma -- thanks guys!! The Rochester FT is Saturday - I'm going to the races ( moto offroad harescrambles that I shoot - one of the series photographers ) so can't make that anyway. The local club is the BSCA ( Broome County Sportsman Association ) near the Binghamton area in south central upstate. That's only 40 minutes from where I live - thats why I was stoked to have discovered them last summer and was really looking forward to shooting a full season out there this year. {sigh} c'est la vie

If curious . . . ( lol ) -- some grabs from the races two weeks ago. Under normal times I also shoot a lot of local high school football.

Not a thing wrong with a BLINGED out MARAUDER for FT duty ... actually there an Excellent gun for the task In the "HUNTER PCP" class.

Have / Had shot my gen 1 blinged out marauder for many years in HFT and still own it to this day where, when shot still holds accuracy against much higher level rigs.

Absolutely ... get out there and shoot some Field Target with it .... beautiful rifle !

My rig looks very similar to yours ...
