I’m curious if anyone has done testing on the difference in the two when it came to accuracy and gun cycle characteristics? Yes I know we are dealing with air guns here but I am curious if anyone has done any testing.
Thank you for the link. Your right not the best experiment but still interesting. This past and the one right after it....
Not a perfect experiment but a data point.BSA Gold Star "Union Jack" in .177, ongoing review
Who's that funky guy on the far left in the photo 😆 Must be the "old man". 😜 Man those other photo's bring back some good memories!www.airgunnation.com
That is very interesting. Both look to be pretty darn good groups. It would appear that the shroud edges out the air stripper. Mainly due to the fact that there is a flyer in the group. Still really close though.I did some testing.
Not a muzzle break and not a moderator, but with an airstripper and shroud with internal backward facing air stripper.
50 Meters, bare barrel, HN Baracuda 21 gr.
These groups are 8 shots, I was looking for a tune, adjusting and settling the Reg. When I thought that I got my numbers I shot single in each circle.
At the end of the day, I mounted an airstripper on bare barrel, the speed jumped +20 fps and the group moved.
Then removed the airstripper and mounted the shroud, the speed jumped +30 fps and the group moved even further and higher.
I circled for you my results.

The environment changed, also shooting 8 groups is faster then shooting 8 individual circles. I am a big fan of shooting with airstripper, especially with .22, and that was a Leshiy2 as well, btw, not really a target oriented setup....It would appear that the shroud edges out the air stripper. ...
Actually, attaching something to the barrel does affect harmonics, which is the physics behind the various adjustable tuners that attach to the barrel, at least that is my understanding. Whether or not it enhances the accuracy in a given barrel is always a question. I used a few different types when shooting rimfire BR. The effects were usually subtle, but sometimes more pronounced. But they usually did affect accuracy. Yes, the purpose of a moderator, air stripper, or shroud is to influence air flow, but for different reasons. Any effect on harmonics is incidental, but still real.No such a thing that you attach externally to a barrel and enhance accuracy, but there are devices you attach to the barrel and minimizing side effects from an airblast coming out at the muzzle - in front pushed by the projectile also following the projectile.
Barrel harmonics is a different unrealated animal that you handle on its own.
You are absolutely correct. But the addition of something to the barrel, even though it is not adjustable and is not for tuning, depending on its weight, can alter the dynamics of the barrel response to firing. And can thus affect accuracy. You can find numerous reports of folks who have added or removed moderators for bench shooting due to its effect. It is not a tuning device by design, and its effect on accuracy, if any, is purely incidental, but it happens. The air stripper / muzzle break have a specific function, handling a barrel harmonics is a process of tuning. I have not seen a single piece gizmo that doing both in same time.
Yeah, in RF I finally decided more trouble than it's worth. There were some top shelf shooters with a lot of time and/or money that swore by the tuners. Between the ammo variables and the tuner configurations, it was almost like work!Yes, and I am shooting BR, not even the barrel tuner too much work with elements, but ocasionally mounting the stripper.
