Found a nest with a couple of mice in it. They scattered as soon as I moved the material they were hiding under. Will they return? Or will they abandon the nest?

They will be close by. Mice leave a scent trail so others will follow. Use Traps, only sure way to catch them. Unless you want pets.

peanut butter is a good bait on traps.. don't use poison, lost my daughter dog because one missed box of poison and then the dog ate the rat..
or hungry hunting cats work well too..
got upset with the big old cat because I caught him letting the rat eat two days in a row.. he was either baiting the rat or getting his meal fat for dinner

Yeah, I usually use PB, never poison. Poison is too risky for other animals. I didn't state it in my OP but the nest I uncovered is outside. Many other animals will eat the PB before the mice do!! haha I do have some small plastic traps that trap them inside. If they don't scatter too quickly, they would be good target practice!!
