Mounting a Hawke 4-16x50

Hello everyone,

This is a follow up on mounting a Hawke 4-16x50 Scope using Hawke High Rings for a 1-inch tube. This is the link to my original post:
https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/question-about-hawke-rings/?referrer=1

I felt the Hawke rings mounted the scope a bit too high leaving a gap of .3705-inches from the Objective end of the scope to the top of the gun barrel. I ordered a set of UTG High rings ( part no. RGWM-25H4 ) which are a Picatinny style of mounting and I figured they would mount the scope a little bit lower and still allow an acceptable gap between the Objective end and the gun barrel. As it turned out the UTG rings are just right leaving a gap of .2280-inches ( see photos ).

I am mounting this on a Umarex Origin rifle but I believe this set of rings will work on most rifles and most scope with a 50mm Objective and a 1-inch tube.

Hope this will be helpful.

I'm just going through a similar experience mounting my scope. The medium rings let the objective clear the gun but they put the scope so low I have to scrunch up my neck to get a good sight picture. I just ordered the high rings and I hope they are not too high. I looked at a few other brands of rings trying to determine what the height would be. The problem is all the mfgrs. ( at least the ones I looked at) use different measurements and you can't compare apples to apples. There ought to be some kind of a standard so we could know how each companies high, for example, compares to others.

Hello egd,

It is hard to find dimensions on rings from most manufactures, and like you sure wish they had a standard. This new set is close to 3/16" lower than the Hawke and is just right for my gun and the way that I shoot. Very comfortable "eye sight wise" for me to look through the scope now. Good luck with your mounting.

Well, my luck, I had ordered the Hawke high rings I received the pkg today and opened it up to find UTG rings just like yours only 30mm that fit my scope.

Now I can't decide what to do. I hate to wait another week to get the Hawke rings sent to me, but that's what I really wanted. I haven't opened them cause I may send them back, but since you have the same thing what is your opinion of them? Maybe I should just use them and call to get the difference refunded. AARRGH!!!

ETA I just re-read your op. If I understand right the utg high rings are not quite as high as the Hawke rings--right? does the quality of them look comparable to the hawke, fit, finish, screws, etc.? Thanks

ETA again I thought I'd check the dimensions and see if I could compare them. Turns out I can. All for 30mm rings btw.

The Hawk medium are 26mm base to center

The Hawke high are 32mm to center

The UTG high are 36mm to center.

I think I'll hold out for the hawke high I wanted.

Hey again egd,

1) Yes they are a bit shorter than the Hawke and that is what I was looking for. They fit on my Picatinny rail much better and very solid. Quality as good or better than the Hawke. I will not hesitate to order UTG again and yes my rings are for 1-inch tube.

The utg is higher than the hawke, by 4mm. But maybe the 1" rings are different, IDK. And maybe it's different for picatinny??

BUT, the more I thought about it and measured some other guns and rings I had I decided to keep the utg. I mounted the scope with them and they fit me very well. So I have the same scope as you Deerstalker, the 4x16x44 Hawke airmax and it's now mounted with the utg high rings on my Beeman 97K.

I can't wait to get out tomorrow afternoon and sight it in. Whoo Hooo!!!

Hello egd,

Yes the 1-inch could be different than the 30mm, but the Hawke is a "Weaver style" of mount and the UTG is a Picatinny style of mount. On my rifle the Hawke locked into place on the Weaver grooves which are above ( on top ) the Picatinny grooves. The lower Picatinny grooves allowed the Rings to mount lower on my rifle. You can really see the difference in the two photos, the original posting photo and this "new" photo. Also I am not sure how the manufactures measure their rings, it would be nice to have some sort of "standard" within the industry. Good luck on sighting in you gun, I will be doing the same I have printed out a good stack of targets 😄

I used Hawke Tactical 2 piece medium 30 mm rings to mount a Hawke 4-16 x 44 mm IR, SF, compact scope on my HW85 & I had to add a leather check piece to align the check weld to the center line of the scope. This also fits my wife who also shoots the rifle.

Hello Deerstalker,

That makes for a nice looking Scope and Mount and I like the low mount.

Well fellows it rained here almost all day and I did not get to target practice as much as I had planned but did get to Zero-in the Scope on the new UTG rings. The first photo shows my first shot was way to the right, I was aiming at the lower center target but the hit was online. I made a big adjustment to the left and you can see the second hit. I made another big adjustment to the left and the third shot was just a bit high so I made a fourth shot ( almost exact same hole ) to see if the off high shot was me or the settings. Made a small adjustment down and the fifth shot was almost dead center.

Moved over to the left lower target and put 5-shots in the 1/2-inch bulls eye. Still a lot more practice to make some minor adjustments but very happy with the new UTG Rings.

The target is 95 feet from my bench, the rifle is a Umarex Origin, .22cal and the pellets are Air Arms Diabolo Field Heavy 18 Gr.

I really appreciate all the help that I received from the very beginning on this project.
