I wanted to shoot the lightest slug possible that grouped well, but I didn't get good accuracy until I hit 388 grains. Is this the norm with the .50 cal Texan?
With my Texan 50 cal it truthfully matters more on diameter than anything. I have four different molds from 450 grain to 500 grain and shoot different cast slugs at 125 yards and shoot real similar. I use my N.OE mold 460grain gas check the most followed by my 650 spire point boat tail. Most important thing is molds being .512 or larger diameter and sized to .510. Don't buy a .510 diameter mold..too.small.through s shots. I have shot the 300 grain from aersonal molds and truthfully it's only ok if shooting 75 yards and under. The B.C is so low that when shooting 160 yards both 300 and 450 drop same amount.. Difference being 450 hits way harder less wind drift.d. 460 grain s go.860 fps in warm weather 2.5 B.C. 650 grain spire point boat tail B.C .5. 750 Fps
This was my second range session with the .50 cal Texan. During my first range session, I discovered the the barrel adapter for my DonnyFL Emperor didn't fit. I ordered again, and the 2nd one didn't fit. Third time was a charm (my fault) and today's range session was with the Emperor. It caused a POI shift of 11" (high) which, in the realm of powder burners, is a big fat no-go. BUT...this is different. So, I dialed my scope down 11" and commenced getting my DOPE for this rifle. All shots were with the tank topped off to 250 bar. I expect these groups to improve after some trigger and barrel work, and after I put my big glass back on. These groups were shot with a 1x-6x tactical scope, all on 6x. Here are the results for 100, 125 and 150:
More testing with the .50 cal Texan yesterday. Ordered .510" 380 grain dish based HPs from ProSlugs off of Ebay and was VERY pleased with the results. Contacted the company and asked for a bulk price on 1000 after testing. 1/2 MOA from a big bore stock air rifle definitely does NOT suck.
I was shooting eggs at 150 yards with the .50 cal after verifying zero and accuracy testing. Eggs with 6x glass was a trick, but the rifle is up to the task!
I'll be testing these more after trigger work is completed on this rifle and after I re-mount optics with more magnification. Anyone else had experience with this brand of slug? I also received some .30 cal 130 HPs that I'll test in my Texan LSS when it's returned from Mad Dog.
