The head and beak looked like a Starling but the tail was longer than European is why I asked.

I must disagree. I believe these to be common grackles not starlings. 

The starling does not have a long tail like what's shown in these pics...

Starlings, grackles, They both need thinned out. Good shooting! Looks like fun.

Those are grackles not starlings! Grackles are native and depending on where you live may be illegal to shoot. At the very least know what you’re shooting at. 

The DNR officer is clueless.

SC DNR regulations states: The following species are protected and may not be hunted, moletsed, caught, transported, sold or possessed in any manner: birds of prey ( eagles, hawks, osprey, owls, kites and vultures) and nongame birds(except English Sparrows, pigeons, Eurasian collard doves and starlings. Falconers must possess a SCDNR permit.
