Moderator and barrel droop

Scored a Huggett Magna on ebay for cheap, for my FX Impact .30. It is Just a little quieter on max power. Noticeable reduction, but not outstanding. The thing is big and heavy. I wanted to see what it did for POI. At 100 yards it now shoots 4& 1/2 inches lower. I wasn't shooting for group size, but I'm not disappointed. Top group is stock moderator,bottom is the Huggett.

That's normal. My Crown in .25 drops 3 cm at 20 yds. with my silencer that weighs 350 grams and the silencer attenuates max velocity of a JSB 25 grain pellet from 940 ft/sec to 900 ft/sec.

I have a Hogan suppressor that is about 1.5 X 7, and it results in a 4 minute drop of POI, sounds about like yours. Normal, nothing to worry about. You can't expect to take it off and on without re-zeroing. Depending on individual barrel harmonics, some shoot better with it, or not.

I put a SUMO on my 700mm barreled Impact .25. POI dropped 7 mils at 75y. I put the Magna on and got more than half of that back and actually sounds a tad 'better' than the Sumo on this one. The magna feels lighter than the Sumo so that makes sense to me. Never really even tested accuracy with the Sumo - I didn't want to adjust my scope that much just to get on paper. BTW, these observations are compared to 5 (total) FX pieces, the Magna and the Sumo both required the fx to 1/2 unf adapter...

I suppose you could, but I think it's a bad idea. Barrel droop is not an accuracy issue anyway. It just changes POI. However, a support like you suggest could very well effect accuracy, as it would change barrel harmonics.

I respectfully disagree since the barrel is floating inside the shroud. The rules that apply to solid barrel powder burners do not apply in this case.

I run an o-ring in between barrel band and shroud that keeps shroud snug. I get 0 change of POI when adding/removing my moderator, my custom LDC also extends 4" and does not change POI when retracted or extended. 

Either look into barrel tensioner or a mod like I or heavy-impact suggested that maintains static shroud position / height.

Too bad the shroud doesn't thread directly into the receiver, instead of just hanging on the barrel,destroying the free float. I might play with a spacer some day...../
