Moderator adapters for unthreaded barrels vs having barrel threaded

If installed correctly do the slip on adapters (e.g., DonnyFL or Wolf) for moderators work OK and stay aligned over time?

Are these a reasonable option for adding a moderator to an unthreaded barrel or is it better to just have barrel threaded?

HW95L factory moderator connection works great and very solid.

They work fine. I have the Weihrauch slip on on my HW90 and a slip on from BSA on my Gamo Urban ( got rid of pickle). I have had no issues with any of them. You will need to tighten the allen screws holding it on the barrel from time to time as the shock of the weapon firing will loosen them. Some blue locktite will help this issue.

My crosmans use buck-rail.com adapters(non threaded barrels)*7/16*; they have set screws to tighten them down to the barrel

I have DFL adapters on my R9 (16mm) and 2240 (11mm). You may have to ream out the inner diameter a hair or so for a good fit. No issues at all with mine.

i have a donny on one .. never a problem, but yeah it came tight, took alittle fitment ...

The fitment is the key to this issue.

If you have a baggy fit to your barrel, you will probably have issues.

Fit it carefully by reaming or honing for a nice slip fit, or shim a bit if it is slightly loose.

Do people not tap and die in set screws anymore?

Set screws used as securement are fine.
I would not rely on set screws to center up a part, or make up for loose tolerances.

What about a "band" or sorts to tighten it down? Just wondering*I do that alot* I just like having things tighten-able maybe it's just me
