Minimum pellet weights

Is there a rule of thumb for minimum pellet weights for air rifles? Specifically, for low to middle power rifles like the HW30, HW50s and HW55. Some of the available non-lead pellets say they are for PCP-use only (usually around 6.5gr in .177) and if used in these rifles are there ill effects?

A 6.5gr is fine for the HW30 as it’s something like a 7fpe powerplant if memory serves. 

For the HW50, Pyramyd says they tested it at about 850fpe with a 7.0gr RWS Hobby so a 6.5gr is probably okay there as well.

Meanwhile it is uncommon to find a non-lead pellet that will group as well as its leaded brethren but I suspect you already know that and are making that compromise for a particular reason. If not though, try some different JSB and H&N and RWS in the 7-9gr range to see what they can really do.

The best way to find out with any particular gun is to chronograph it with a range of weights and see where it produces the most energy. Pellets in that general vicinity will almost always produce the best accuracy.

Thanks very helpful. My HW30/R7s can shoot just about anything well. They really seem to like the RWS Meisterkugelens. I just received an HW50s and I am still breaking it in and trying to find its favorite pellet. The HW50 is easy to shoot but certainly different from the HW30.

Since your rifle like wadcutter RWS, give Vogel 8 grain a try. I have switched all my wadcutters to these. Quality is great. Foam lined tins too. Shipping bargains for larger purchase.
