Maverick=broken valve seal. Already???

Was just doing some testing as a courtesy to "B" for asking about shooting 18.13 JSB from the Maverick .22 sniper. Haven't touched it since my outing last Wednesday and the fantastic 100yd groups I shared. Nothing special here but a few small reg adjustments and small HS rotations from stock.

Here is the tune I was testing with, starting with HS 1 working up to around mid 800 to 900's for his ideal.

  • 1st reg- 145 bar
  • 2nd reg 120 bar
  • Factory HS adjustment was .142 (3.63mm)
  • 1.5mm hammer adjuster from stock=.148 (3.82mm)

I only got to power level #2 when the FX chrony would no longer register and became very loud, like supersonic. Was odd.

After a couple more shots I could then hear air coming out of the barrel when cocked. That sounded like valve seat to me??? (Dreamline did the same thing) Thoughts ?

I also retrieved an 18.13 pellet after the fact and I was astonished at the shaving of the pellet head from the Superior liner. Here is a shot of a new one to compare.

Will now take it apart to see the damage and report. Good thing it snowed today 😆 so I'm good. Nothing here I can't fix with the parts from FX if needed 😉 (Thank you FX!)

Here is my chrony for the 10 shot string. First 5 are on #1 and next 5 are on #2 with my earlier mentioned tune, The string was just odd to me from the beginning. Quite hot I would say for such a low HS adjustment of 1 and 2 @ 120 bar.

Fun days ahead to share. Hope FX hears what I'm saying, And there is much more than this from the time I opened the case to now that was, well, let's just say, really?...details,details,details...hummm.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I will shoot the WC MK3 for bit now 😉

How many rounds through it? Ours took a long time to settle in. I’m wondering if it had something to do with two regulators and the second not being under as much pressure. Pure speculation but that shot string is absolutely crazy. I know that doesn’t address the valve not sealing but one thing at a time. LOL

I shot around 100-200 rounds with various pellets/slugs before I changed anything from the factory settings in order to get a benchmark for tuning JSB KO as my primary slug. I realize the break in period and adjusted accordingly I felt, nothing crazy, just 10 bar +- on both regs as shared by Ernest and 68 Whisky within the range suggested of 30-35 bar. This shot string is crazy and I knew it after a couple three shots. I am humbly asking one question at a time to you all who know way more than I what would be the next step. I do have the tools, but, sometimes you need a friend to help. Thank you all.

It looks like the pellet is not seating deep enough to clear the transfer port. I say that due to the bottom edge of the pellet skirt looking like it is rolled up and inwards in your first picture.

Myself, I would either return the rifle for warranty repair, or tear it down to inspect the valve stem and seat for the presence of debris.



The pellet not seating deep enough would account for your velocity variations and may have contributed to debris from the pellet skirt winding up in the valve seat area.

Hate that you are having the issues. Only thing I can add is the head is not being shaved. It is extruded due to the ridiculously tight .005" choke in the barrels. I have NO Idea why anyone would use a .005 choke. No one else in the industry does such a thing.

I do know that for slugs, when I removed the choke, (regardless of Matt saying it was absolutely needed for accuracy), became stellar whereas with the choked barrel it was lackluster. Total turnaround.

Chuck, I see what you are saying. I will mark and check the probe depth with an 18.13gr. I would like to tear it down and inspect the valve stem for debris/damage as well.

I got similar thing happen to me on my impact so I automatically unscrew the bottle when I heard the leak and when I screw it back leak was gone , maybe there is some dirt inside preventing from sealing correctly and you need that burst of air to clean it?

B, no worries, was just trying to be helpful since I had some time and no real adjustments needed to be made to test. I knew it would shoot hot on #7 with such a light pellet, that's why I started on HS #1 as a benchmark. I did unscrew the bottle immediately as well.

Knifemaker, looks like exactly that, extruded. I see now why some "test" JSB KO's I was using a week and a half ago lost 130fps compared to the .217 out of my tin, they measured .2185!!! Way to big for these barrels.

I think all guns Need proper break in period and don't touch anything at all period not even a single adjustment whatsoever including trigger before shooting at least 500 rounds. Goes for all guns not only FX. Things gotta seat and wear in properly.

Things need to settle in first before tinkering lotsa wasted money spent fixing things that shouldn't even be broken just not broken in properly that's all. HUMA must be real happy.

I understand what you mean even though I did not follow your advice. Thanks for your wisdom.

I did have around 300 slugs/pellets through it at the time. 

(EDIT: I looked at my shot count on my chrony and added the 4 mags I shot at metal for fun and the # was closer to 300)

This issue appears to have a starting commonality with the Dreamline if more incidents come into play.

I sure hope not considering the potential power output they claim for the Maverick.

I had an "incident" with my Dreamline that was similar to the early Impacts IIRC. Look Familiar? FX sent me a new valve stem and seat NC. Still working fine.
