Tuning Marauder JSAR tune help

Hey fellas I just finished building my marauder with the JSAR balanced valve and the following mods, TSS with only the light spring installed and backed all the way out that I could do without drilling out some of the stock. Light hammer from jsar and I installed the hill hfpt transfer port with a .194 ID. Everything seems to be working properly. That being said the valve is not very consistent. You can see how it drops or gains power all over the place. It clearly is conserving air better than the stock valve because of how many shots I was able to get at full power. So one thing I was thinking of to fix this is to drill out a small amount of stock to back the spring out a bit more so that it can have a tiny amount of space between the hammer and spring to eliminate hammer bounce. It currently has just a tiny amount of preload on the spring. The other thing I'm thinking of is obviously to install a regulator. The problem is that I read something on a post that one of those balanced valves says not to use a regulator. I'm not sure if it was Gen 1 or Gen 2. Also I don't really know what Gen mine is because a member sent it to me. Do any of you guys know if that's true? I don't know why you couldn't run a reg but I know I read that somewhere. Anyway any advice would be welcome. Perhaps balanced valves need to have a good break in period? I put 150 shots through it and it got slightly better but still kinda all over the place. Thanks guys I appreciate all your help.

I have both Gen 1 and Gen 2 SS valves but I don’t remember what the specific changes were to be able to identify them.

The first generation is the one that was said to run better without regulation but I ran it with a Lane Mk 9 almost the whole time. I will say that the gen 1 that I had did seem to produce a lot of power fairly easily unregulated. I remember slinging 21 gr Barracudas around 940 fps with the stock spring at the top of the fill during initial testing with my first Gen 1. Gen 1 is also the version that a lot of people reported problems with striction wreaking havoc with their first shot or two after the valve sits for a while. There was also a “fix” package offered for Gen 1 valves that included a different jet (and something else I’m forgetting right now) than what it shipped with originally.

The second Gen supposedly fixed the striction issues and made them friendlier to regulation.

I went from 40 regulated shots at 860 fps with H&N FTT 14.66 to 40 regulated shots at 870 with JSB 18.13 gr going from stock valve and ending with the gen 2 SS. There are other aftermarket bits in the mix too (Hill TP and hammer, short spring, etc.).

One other tip I have heard is that you should never dry fire these SS valves with no pressure in the reservoir, they need the back pressure or they may be damaged.

Thanks guys. Yeah I knew not to dry fire it. Thanks for warning me tho. As for the hammer since it's made from self lubricating vinyl I didn't lube it with anything. I did hear from one guy that I could a use dry powder lube like graphite or something? I polished the tube really well and it seems to be smooth and functional but that is something I could look into.

Did / does your valve HAVE A SMALL JET sitting in the middle of the intake grate ?

If it has the small carb jet screwed into the intake grate it is a GEN 1 If the intake grate is flat just having the radial intake holes and no jet a GEN 2

Personally have a LOT of experience with these valves and each generation has it's quirks.

Gen 1 valves don't work well regulated unless above @ 2400 psi & are best suited to run unregulated

Gen 2 valves work great regulated and IMO do best regulated !!

BOTH requires miens of controlling / limiting poppet lift as part of the set up.

TSS type spring not ideal where an SSG device is far superior !!!

Thanks guys. I definitely have the Gen 2 because I don't remember any kind of screw on piece by the intake. As for my goals I just wanted to have a good amount of shots with 25g pellets at over 800 fps. I use poly mags alot for racoon hunting so I'm just trying to push them past 800 fps. I would be stoked if I could get 3 mags with an acceptable ES for hunting which I'm guessing would be at least 35 fps. I don't need it at regulated numbers but these wild swings between shots has to go. Also a spring stop guide would be what exactly? Can I make my own? I saw some different ideas to stop hammer bounce and I went with the TSS instead. What SSG would you guys recommend? Thanks again. Looks like I have some work to do. I wonder if the marauder regulator in my field and target would work? Its actually a really really good regulator. I am getting insanely good consistent shots with it. I'm not really sure what it's set at from factory but it works great in the FT. Anyway thanks guys. I mainly just need a recommendation on that SSG.
