How do you tell a first gen Marauder from a second?

Many ways but one of them is that gen 1 has exposed lug for the cocking bolt on side of the breech, gen 2 does not.

Another is the 1st gen mrod only came in a wood stock with a non adjustable cheek piece

Gen2's came in wood or syn both with adjustable cheek pieces.

The trigger groups also have different mounting holes locations but that would require removing the stock to see.

The trigger guard is distinctive on both as well. The Gen 1 had a rounded, elliptical shaped trigger guard, while the Gen 2 is more square in appearance.

VERY EASY ....

Look at upper Receiver and note if you SEE 4 ( 4-40 size ) cap screws holding it down to lower tube. Or just see 2 on forward barrel end of receiver ?

GEN 1 will have 2 screws up front and none viable in the rear section.
GEN 2 will have 2 up front, 2 in the rear.
BOTH will have a bolt detente screw at the rear middle area of receiver.

All of the above are correct - any one or combination of them will identify the generation . . . and just to explain things on the Gen 1 reciever that Scott described, the Gen I has one screw that holds down the rear of the reciever, but to get to it you have to remove the bolt detente screw and then the bolt itself. The screw is hidden under the bolt.
