Marauder 22, regulated, LW barrel - inconsistent FPS

Folks at home, folks at home...

Got my hands on a brand new Marauder in 22 cal. Its the regulated version with the Lothar Walther barrel.

Ran roughly 200 pellets through it and noticed the accuracy was.... well... poor.

Tested 8 different pellets from JSB, H&N and RWS through the rifle and nothing grouped. Everything was shooting roughly 1.5 to 2" groups at 50 yards. AKA - terrible.

Decided to check speeds over chrono and was shocked. Saw speeds from 790 to 860, and everything in-between.

It is a brand new rifle... I've never had these problems with all my other PCP's (Daystate and FX).

Ideas?!?

Sounds to me then like the hammer is off in someway. Sorry I miss-read that. I am leaving the house in a second and have a baby in one arm and secretly reading forums in-between news and forums haha.

I am working on an older Marauder that is broken right now. The good thing is they are probably the most fixable and supported guns ever.

What is your shot string like? Are you refilling and shooting right away? Obviously regulator issues could be it too...obviously the most complicated organ in your rifle is going to be the most likely fail point and being that you are having inconsistent velocity that would point to a regulator issue

Velocity is all over the place. I'll typically slow fill, give it some time as I'm shooting other rifles and then come back to the Marauder. First 5-6 shots are an inch or more high with occasional flier in random directions. From there it goes all over. Two inches low, an inch left, dead on, back high. No consistency at all.

And this is only at 35 to 50 yards. I have targets at both distances.

The rifle will occasionally group 2-3 pellets, then its back to flinging all over the paper.

Not much fun going from my Wildcat and Impact, punching one hole groups to this Marauder and watching it throw pellets like I was blind folded.

What you are describing FYI sounds like reg creep i.e. pressure escaping into your plenum hence the overpowered shots in the first few shots taken.

Lots of things can cause inconsistent velocities. Try the least invasive thing first. Make sure the hammer spring tension is set correctly. Keep adding tension until the velocity no longer increases, then back it off until the velocity falls to 97S% of that maximum. So let’s say it tops out at 920fps, dial it back to about 890fps. (By the way, if you find the max to be way high up like >1000fps, that would explain why you’ve been getting poor consistency. The regulator’s pressure is too high and it has been operating in a state of partial valve lock.)

It doesn’t sound like clipping…that can cause the velocity to be all over the place but groups would likely be far, far worse than 2” at 50yds. Still, it’s quick and easy to remove the shroud so it’s worth trying to rule it out.

Next up, a bad breech seal will cause wild fluctuations. It’s possible a defect in the O-ring undetectable to the eye could be causing it. Replace it for good measure.

Another common cause is friction between the hammer and tube, whether that’s a sticking a galling problem or too much wet lubricant . Both the hammer and tube need to be smooth and burnished with a dry lubricant (graphite, molybdenum disulfide, or tungsten disulfide powder).

...or yeah, send it back!

Nervoustrig covered basically everything. Aside from pulling the reg apart and inspecting it. I'd ask what will void the warrantee. Then decide if you want to inapext/repair or send back.

One of my friends in Malaysia uses cheap paintball regs on a lot of guns, and simply polishes the washers and makes sure everything is correct as far as play, seal, lips, burs, ect. And gets great ES numbers
