Make Your Own .257 Slugs for the Texan ? How ??

So never created slugs. my closest experience is creating fishing lures with a mold that was either a spinner bait mold, jig and Pig or buzz bait. My experience is very simplistic, You would take simple lead melt it in a pot and pour it into a mold avoiding any air bubbles while pouring. A very small learning and curve but it is simple.

My question what else is involved with creating slugs. I need a mold , lead, and a melting pot, ability to pour into the mold. Is there any special metal mixtures ? Is there alot more too this ? Cant find what molds would work with with a .257 texan. Looking for somehting with a high BC. Also what post processing like oiling lubing and sizing a barrel and what that takes??

Thanks and any help would be great ?

i cast all my own big bore slugs.. good lead is number 1 thing.. and having the right sizing die.. every gun it different even if u have the same gun as someone else no 2 barrels are the same. i would say get a lee pot. they poor out the bottom. if u want to save money u can hand pour (thats how i started) .. everything after that is what you think is best .. its a lot of fun when u start making your own ammo.

p.s everyone has there own why of casting just have fun with it!!

So the steps would be , get lead with 2 + tin, Pour in mold. Know the slug size of your own barrel. Once done casting the bullet you need to resize the slug to the specific diameter say .2571 vs .2579 of your barrel right ?

I do see these casts molds for about $88.00 per mold of 5. How do I find a bullet sizer or am I missing something with the resizer ?

Once done bullet sizing you use slick 50 or some lube on the slugs right and bam done ?

I have been using whatever scrap lead I can get. Fishing/diving weights, pellets, etc. I sort by weight after casting.

My 257420 BT gets about 0.160 BC.

I use the same lube as I use for my cast 9mm loads. Beeswax and lithium grease mixture. For the airgun slugs, I spread out a thin layer of lube on a flat surface and roll the slug over it to lightly coat the perimeter. And then run it through my sizer. I made my own sizer.

These have performed very well.

With the NOE sizing die, you buy the body and then purchase whatever size bushing you need for your bullet. Slug your barrel first or get a .257 and a .258 bushing and then try slugs you sized against each other and see which shoots better.

I didn’t go look, but if my memory is close, the sizing die is about $40 and the bushing are $9.

I also use a bottom pour Lee pot. The Arsenal 85 grain spitzer is what I used to shoot at the range and performs very well. I would probably not plan to hunt with that Bullet though. I’m planning to order a new 257420 mold and send it out to get it Hollowpointed.

This is by far my favorite hollow point that is also the most accurate in my tj barrel 257.

Slug your barrel then mic the bullet to know what size your barrel is. Then you can order the sizing die from noe. The cast ammo, size them, sort them and shoot them. I do not lube cast ammo. Lubed vs not lube accuracy was the same.

I have tried 257420, arsenal Spitzer and some others. Remember the bullets are more accurate the fast speed before braking speed. So ideally 1000 to 1050 fps is ideal speed to maintain bullet stability
