The next rifle in my "maintenance series" is a .22 RAW early "AirForce" acquisition from Utah Airguns. Ordered in Cerekote finish with the MagPul stock upgrade, this is one of my favorite PCPs. It is fitted out with an Accu-Tac bipod, West Hunter Vertically Adjustable 30mm rings, and a RAW Sidewinder 6-25x56 with the IR Pro Reticle. Both of my RAWS shoot slugs and pellets nearly the same at 100 yards, except in heavy wind conditions like today, where the slugs do considerably better.
I started the maintenance check as I always do, looking at the pressure gauge and cleaning the barrel. The barrel wasn't too dirty and after about six patches, spraying the first three with Ballistol, everything was nice and clean. I checked the scope mounting screw tension using the Wheeler digital torque wrench. It was while doing that that I noticed the turrets were marked for 1/4" adjustments, and checking the trajectory chart I had put together, I had assembled it for 1/10th MRAD click adjustments. I immediately went to Strelok Pro and made the appropriate setting adjustments.
Once I had verified that all of the stock and scope screws were properly adjusted, I moved to the 18 yard indoor range to check near zero. I ended up moving both scope and windage a couple of clicks each, and then adjusted the turrets and locked them back into place. The resulting chrono groups can be seen below.
Next, even though the wind was blowing, quartering in, variable from 15mph to 25mph according to the Weather Channel app, I moved to my covered deck and checked the click adjustments for elevation using the 83 yard target - the maximum distance I have available at my home range. It was off about two clicks. Once I made the proper adjustments to the Strelok settings, and tested the setting at distances between 50 and 83 yards, I reprinted the table, then shot the 83 yard 10 shot test group using the designated click settings on the accompanied trajectory chart, which is now afixed to the side of the air bottle. Given the wind conditions, I was not displeased at the outcome.
This is a terrific rifle. I keep thinking that some day I will remove the factory "can" moderator and replace it with something more tasteful, but it does work pretty well and the accuracy is terrific.
Thanks for looking....
