MAINE \"Newbie\" to Air Rifles (well, I had one fifty years ago).

Hi all,

I just wanted to say "Hello". This is my first post here at AGN (I joined just moments ago). Per my title, I haven't had an Air Rifle since I was a Kid in the mid-1960's. I couldn't recall which make Air Rifle I owned (like I said, it was fifty years ago) however, I punched in some descriptive Rifle "info" into Google Search and I'll be a Son of a Gun if I didn't find that old Air Rifle! A (circa mid-60's) CROSMAN PELL MASTER 700 (.22) C02. I swear, I had more fun using that ol' Crosman. I "dispatched" one Hell of a lot of Pigeons, Starlings, Squirrels, Rats, etc. with this so called (under powered) Air Rifle. Flash forward 2020. I decided it was high time that I purchase a new Air Rifle (especially) for all the usual "Prep" reasons in light of today's upside down World. I started searching/re-searching for days and day, hours and hours. I made several phone calls to Air Rifle Suppliers and even some calls to the Air Rifle Companies themselves. Of course I started my search with the typical "Youtube" Video reviews and went from there. I tend to dig REALLY deep. I finally landed on several Air Shooting Forums and picked apart thread after thread trying to "separate the wheat from the chaff" so I could make a INFORMED purchase/decision. I also had to be VERY honest with myself as to "how much" Rifle I really needed for my wants and needs. I looked at (on line) most every Air Rifle made. Ugggh, what a task! I found it MUCH more difficult trying to decide on an Air Rifle vs. a Center Fire Rifle/Pistol (or 22LR). Well, in the end (thanks to my DAYS & HOURS) of research, I feel I made a SOLID purchase. I should receive my new Air Rifle sometime next week. Oooh, I think I got lucky! I purchased (I was told by Salesman) THE last one "on Sale" Weihrauch (.22) HW50S. I do believe I'm going to love this Air Rifle for a long time to come!

Hi all, Thank you for all the show of support. I really do believe I made a SUPER choice by spending just a bit more money for the HW50S. Man, I haven't even yet received the HW50S and I'm ALREADY looking at other Air Rifles! Yikes! I'm really liking the WALTHER TERRUS in .22 for the money (assuming one can find one at a reasonable price). Personally, I rather stick with "European" made Air Rifles (especially) German made Air Rifles. I'm thinking the various models of GAMO appear to be "decent" enough quality for the money however, I suspect it's worth investing a tad more money for (again) the likes of a "GERMAN made" Air Rifle. Oooh, for reasons unknown, I continue to see displayed at the bottom of the FORUM TOPICS page, a message saying that I can NOT create a NEW topic. I'm not sure whats up with that as (last night) I originally posted my first new Topic on the "Springer" page. At any rate, I have a question regarding a "Sightron Scope" that I'm hoping someone here with experience may be able to answer. It just so happens that I own a NOS (never used/in box) SIGHTRON SI Series 3-9 x 32mm Scope with Crosshair Reticle (SI39X32RF/Matte Black) that I purchased several years ago and put aside. Would it be SAFE if I use this Scope on my (soon to arrive) new Weihrauch HW50S (.22) Air Rifle without destroying the Scope ? The HW50S is suppose to be a "moderate" power Spring Air Rifle however, I sure don't want to DESTROY a brand new Scope. Thank you all for any help/suggestions/recommendations/suggestions you my offer.

Other that what I've heard about the cocking effort for the power, the HW50 in .22 is perhaps the best single purchase possible. I have come to prefer the medium to lower power springers over their magnum big brothers (which in .177, I put at 1,000+ FPS). Your 50 has more energy delivery than my 30, is not much heavier, and should be a much smoother shooter but still equal to my 95 or 97K. The weight of the 95, and espcecially the 97K, scoped really hinders my off-hand shooting. From a rest, the 95 and 97 are lasers, too. I guess from a rest the 97K is my favorite shooter.

Also, you avoided starting with multiple guns like me--continually looking for what's better--quieter, lighter, not pellet picky, stable platform not necessity finicky artillery holds, etc.

Now, be sure to do your homework on pellets. Though my Weihrauch's shoot virtually everything, there's definitely a preference for each rifle. For my .177, that's anything between 8.3-8.65 gr. pellets. I get great, consistent results (of course, when I'm doing my part).

Glad you've started with such an outstandingly made air rifle. Regal us with stories about your trophy shots. And, do be careful, these high powered pellet AIR rifles can be dangerous if not respected.

Cheers,

Arch_E

Thank you Bio, CM, John & Arch. I very much appreciate you thoughts and comments on my first Air Rifle purchase (in fifty years!) Arch, a special THANK YOU to you for your in depth review/comments regarding the HW50S. Believe me, I had to restrain myself from just hitting the "go" button and purchasing the FIRST positive review Air Rifle (Youtube) video I watched. I found a few Youtube reviews that I thought were pretty good and.....honest. As I mentioned, I spent the better part of three days and nights (all day & night) obsessed with reading & watching reviews the Net wide. I dug really deep and it was the likes of Air Gun Nation and other Air Rifle "Forums" that tipped the scales for me in favor of the HW50S for all the excellent reasons you mentioned. I will be sure to test several brands/type of Pellets to see which the HW50S prefers. Oooh, yes indeed Arch_E. I will indeed treat the Air Rifle with respect! Thanks again.
