Magnum Springers, do they perform as advertised? I tested mine.

Hello everyone,

long time reader that just signed up, I value the knowledge of the forum, so here's my contribution. I tested my Magnum springers/IGT to see how they did with different pellets from the lightest I had to the heaviest. they are all .177 or 4.5mm.

Magnum Springers/Gas ram

Rifle: Advertised speed/Power:

Gamo Hunter Extreme Pro .177 1650 fps with alloy pellets

Gamo Raptor Whisper .177 1300 fps with Gamo Platinum PBA

Diana 460 .177 1050 fps/ 27 Joules with lead pellet (19.9 fpe)

Diana 54 .177 975 fps/ 24 Joules with lead pellet (17.7 fpe)

Diana Magnum Premium .177 1070 fps/ 28J with lead pellet (20.65 fpe)

HW97K .177 951 fps/20J with lead pellet (14.75 fpe)

Hw85 .177 951 fps/20j with lead pellet (14.75 fpe)

Pellets tested:

I tested strictly for speed and power, everyone knows these guns are most accurate with the Field target trophy 8.64 and those type style pellets.

This is more for fun to see the limits of the guns tested to see how fast and slow I could make them shoot. I shot 5 shots with each pellet here are the averages.

There you have it folks. I tried to be as consistent as I could. Same distance about 10 inches from the muzzle.

I used a brand new Air- Chrony Mk3 that I just bought from Airguns of Arizona.

It was 82F/ 28C with 71% humidity sea level in Houston.

Other mention, Weihrauch HW45 air pistol 280 fps with 16.2grain and 715 fps with 4.32grain.

Conclusion , yes they perform as advertised.

Alfred.

I didn’t test it I imagine it would be like a knuckle ball at distance. The FFT green is surprisingly good out to about 15 yards. At least it’s great fun to hear even a modestly powered airgun making a supersonic crack. The light alloy pellets are much harder than the lead and might put extra wear on the barrel if you use a ton of them. Noticed that they make much cleaner holes through the pellet box.

Turkish built Webley Tomahawk .177 springer. Except for cosmetic stuff (stock, moderator and badging) it's the same rifle as the Hatsan Model 95. Hatsan says 1000 fps.

H&N Sniper Medium 8.5gr: Average 952 fps, ES of 7, SD of 2, 17.1 fpe

RWS R10 Match Heavy 8.2gr: Average 975 fps, ES of 29, SD of 9, 17.3 fpe

For the gentleman who said they should be advertised as miss every time? They're 5 years old but the targets shot with those 2 pellets from a rifle brand new out of the box, untuned and maybe 100 shots on it when I shot them. 25 yards, 20 shots with each.....

I was also wondering why the 16.2 grain pellet had such bad power rating compared to the others. The only reason I could think of, is that the pellet is longer and fits snugger. It is also almost slug shaped and creates a lot more friction resistance going through the barrel and looses energy. Not sure that is the explanation. If anyone else knows please chime in.
