Match Report for 8/30/2024
We had a great turnout for this month’s match, with 16 shooters joining us for a beautiful day of shooting. A big thank you to Khoa and Lan, who showed up bright and early (around 7:00–7:30 AM) to help set up the sight-in area, paint targets, and tackle a few minor repairs. Their help was much appreciated!
The weather started off cool, in the low 60s, but quickly warmed up into the high 70s by the afternoon—perfect shooting weather. We shot in the back section of the course this time, where the targets are nestled deep in the woods alongside a marsh. The dense cover made visibility a real challenge and added to the fun. We ran 16 lanes total, with a maximum possible score of 64 points.
It’s been a couple of months since I hosted a match, and I’ll admit—I wasn’t quite prepared for the strong turnout. After a bit of a scramble to make some last-minute repairs and get everyone signed in, I realized I was out of the proper scorecards for a 16-lane setup. Things were a bit confusing at first, but with a few quick adjustments, we got rolling, and everything ran pretty smoothly from there.
The air had its own personality this month. A light headwind was pushing shots low beyond 50 yards, with occasional swirls and shifts from side to side—usually under 5 mph, but enough to make wind calls tricky. It definitely kept us on our toes when choosing a hold-off on those longer targets.
We had about five cold lines throughout the day, but I was able to isolate a few so only half the course was paused. We also had a couple of target issues: one protest due to a slow-falling target that just needed some WD-40, and another where a split was called a miss. One target’s string was shot off (those tricky angles!) and a few branches decided to fall right into a killzone. We even had a string get stuck in a tree stump. Just another day on the course!
I shot with Leo Gonzales so I could still manage my match director duties throughout the day. All classes shot the standard AAFTA Format—two shots per target.
Looking ahead, next month’s match will be the Massachusetts State Championship, and we’ll be making a few improvements for that event. Thanks so much to everyone who helped out and made this month’s match a success. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon!
