N/A Low powered guns

There's room for every gun in this hobby, every speed and taste.

I like to see where an item will take me, it's the journey not so much the destination that appeals to me so running a Notos to 1200fps is a fantastic journey to run.

Application? Frankly, who cares? I've got 9000 feet of forest to the north and miles of forest to my south, too much power and speed is nonsensical on my land.

M U R I C A!

That said, I also have my detuned, ultra conservative Notos shooting CPHP'S at 670-680 fps that really seems to like that speed with a 380mm barrel.

It's very fun to shoot and with a light hair trigger, the Darling-Starlings just fall from the tree and don't alarm the rest of the group with the Subscriber Tesla moderator insert hushing the report.

Aahh my kind of thread:) I’ve experienced with slugs in my fx impact but I never enjoy the louder shots and the low shotcount. Recently I went the opposite way and decided to try a 12ft-lbs tune. I started with .22 jsb rs (13.43gr) and turned the reg to 80bar and then turned the hammer all the way down until the micro adjust runs out of thread:) then tried to find some consistency in speed with the valve adjuster. I ended up shooting at 600fps so it’s more around 15ft-lbs but man! All you can hear is the hammer clicking, and then there’s the shotcount… I shot 6 28round mags from 250bar to 150bar so I suppose another 4mags from 150bar to 80?😂 now I can finally shoot my little spinners at 50yards with a pcp without throwing them over:) it’s quite ridiculous to shoot that low power with such an expensive rifle but hey I’m enjoying the crap out of shooting now:) I’ve been shooting over pigeons, they don’t even notice:)

I primarily punch paper at home and hunt pigeons at a large dairy farm so low power rifles appeal to me for those purposes. Right now I have a P-rod and Notos both tuned in the 585 FPS range which is plenty of power to dispatch flying rats and poke holes in paper. I’m in the process of tuning a Vixen which is pretty fantastic, at least at 10M. As soon as the weather calms a bit I will stretch its legs outdoors to find a tune @25Y zero.
Saw this older post and I want to get my Notos tuned down as well, did you cut or get a lighter hammer spring? and what grain pellet were you shooting at 585fps

I agree. I have a couple rifles turned up, just for kicks, but my favorites are tuned down to comfortable, air economizing levels. I have an HW100.22 tuned to 12fpe, a Crosman Challenger at 6fpe and a Notos. The see far more use than high speed rifles.
My HW100s couldn’t hit the side of a barn when new. Polygon rifling, 20+ ft/lbs and anything under was a disaster.. It took a year to improve, and another to come good.
Now after nine years I have it at 7ft/lbs for shooting inside sheds, and it is a laser. Loaded with alternate Bara15 and Hades in a magazine they stack through one hole at 8m and 15m with same crosshairs. Head shots on pest birds. Just as satisfying as the P3 knocking pigeons at 90m/66lbs. One fill seems to last for countless magazines. 😃😃

During pellet - tuning testing I found my .117 M3 was most accurate and precise at 20 yards indoors with the RWS MEISTERKLUGEN 10 meter 7 grain competition air pistol wadcutter pellet and the H&N Baracuda FT 9.57 grain domed pellet with the Macro set to 1, the Micro set to 1.5 and the air valve at 3., with the regulators at 120/70 bar.

This setup produces 11.5 to 12 fpe and is very quiet and very accurate and can be very precise if I am shooting my best. I have produced a 5 round group with the H&N pellet that was 0.191" edge to edge at 20 yards indoors.

I know the cool thing to do these days are shoot slugs and heavy pellets at 1000fps+ but I haven't been known to just go with the norm. Crazy take but I love shooting low powered PCPs. My newest acquisition was a gently used Uragan Compact .22. Came shooting 817fps with 16gr FX pellets. Nice speed but at that level the gun felt and sounded alittle harsh. But my plan was to back it down anyways for barn use. So I tuned it to 600fps with the same 16gr which put it at 640fps with the CPHPs for a nice 13fpe. It just sips air and is such a pleasure to shoot. The cocking effort is basically non existent and paired with a red dot makes a great 30yd and in gun. I did shoot a pigeon at around 45yds though yesterday with it and still easy to do with the red dot. For close range pesting in a backyard these are perfect power levels unless you deal with larger pests like a raccoon or something. I think if you haven't you should definitely try a low powered gun. You might love it.View attachment 452259

yes. i definitely agree.

I love shooting my Vulcan 30cal 62.5g slugs @ 1000fps / 137fpe and love shooting the Pulsar .177 13.34g slugs @ 1010fps / 30fpe....but also love shooting my tuned down Notos shooting 25.83g @ 329fps / 6.25fpe...it's like lobbing a bowling bowl LOL

Each rifle and tune is for a specific reason, the Notos is specifically for shooting backyard and wanted to be under 7 fpe and still be accurate out to 20 yards which is the max I'm shooting at in the yard.

I was all out of Rangemaster kings in 25.83g and out of JSB 15.89 and 18.13, was supposed to hit up Airguns of Arizona today but got tied up so I used my backup Gamo Swarm Hollow Point 10X when I saw this ringneck dove join the native doves.

Will have none of that.

The 15.43g Gamo HP are only shooting 418fps / 5.5fpe and still get a pass through on the dove

Its always interesting to see how low power airguns can dispatch pests cleanly...good work!

Why not? Too many of us have been lured into the high power/slug shooting for no good reason other than it's the American way. I just bought an HW35E springer in .22 cal that shoots 12 fpe, or around 600 fps with 15.9 gr pellets and it's very accurate and reaches out to 50 yards easily. Even though I have .30 cal rifles that I shoot in 100 yd competition, I enjoy shooting my .177 cal rifles the most, especially my Daystate Wolverine R that get 160 shots per fill at 19 fpe. Just make you targets smaller and closer. It's just as much fun and just as challenging.

I have a wide variety of air rifles including some powerful slug shooters. I have to say though that shooting my ten meter rifles, with scopes mounted, out at distances they weren’t designed for is some of the most fun I’ve had. I like silhouette shooting and punching those rams out to 45 yards with a 6fpe rifle is a blast.

I have shot 30cal at 100fpe with pellets and 10.5 fpe springers. I am really enjoying the 30fpe 22s and sub 20 177s. Never have tried the slug stuff very seriously. I think the reason I enjoy the low power more is more shot count at a sitting. I hate having to fill up my PCP's and go back to shooting. Sure I have guns for higher power competitions but I only shoot those when practicing for a match coming up and the rest of the time I'm shooting lower power air rifles. I got into air guns for fun and shooting oellets. I mostly hunt squirrels during the fall and winter and 20 foot pounds will do that all day long. Now I've killed him with 100 foot pound 30cal but it's just a waste to me. I'm not knocking people who enjoy the high power or try to get high power but like said earlier I'll grab a rim fire or a center fire for that. My only neighbors are my cattle so I don't have to worry about getting people mad at me or only having a limited range to shoot. I am blessed to have ample land to shoot. But there's something about sitting down at the bench or on bucket and shooting sticks and shooting well over 100 shots at one setting and having a blast.

Here’s one you don’t see very often anymore. It’s a one off custom stocked RWS850 with an HPA conversion. I’ve got it set to just below 12 fPE and it prefers the 7.87 JSB’s from the pellets I’ve tested. With the 360cc bottle , I can easily get 180 shots per fill.
I’ve got a decent collection and this one is one of my favorites. I’ve got a Ratworks aluminum cylinder on the way for the .22 HW100. It may end up closer to 20 fpe rather than the 30 it’s set up as now.
