LOUDNESS 2-Low-Medium ?

Purchased a Benjamin Fortitude Gen 2. To be honest, I thought it was going to shoot ok. I was wrong. Quarter size groupings at 25 yards so I’m not complaining. This air gun is SOLID. 
Besides the great accuracy, it’s REALLY quiet. Loudness was rated at 2-Low-Medium.


Could use a lighter trigger tho (currently working on that thanks to YO).

I live in the city and my neighbors only hear the pellet strikes...(and working on a quieter target too ;) )

any recommendations of BREAK BARRELS that can do the same? All I see is Gamo listed at 3-Medium for Loudness on AGD’s website.

any others I should be looking at?

You should get under a dime sized groups at 25 yards easy with a 22 Fortitude with the right pellet. Hope you already tried-

Crosman Premier Hollowpoints

Crosman Pointed 14.3gr in the 175 count tins

JSB 15.9 and 18.1gr

H&N FTT 5.53 and 5.54

H&N Baracuda 21gr

If none of these gives you sub dime sized groups at 25 yards then ask for a return shipping label to exchange it because looks like you got a bad barrel.

Only the FWB 300s and HW30s can be as quiet. Everything more powerful suggested will be noticeably louder with an HW97k borderline not backyard friendly OH maybe barely OK with optional adapter with HW silencer from AoA or Krale. I have one in 22 and it's LOOOOOONG. Maybe a LONG 177 HW77 mines quiet but a beater from someone who had it a while. It's quieter than my 177 HW97Ks very similar with shorter barrels.

Ha...that would be a joke for MOST shops..! WAY too expensive an undertaking for accurate values.

Measuring loudness "properly"...or better, "accurately", takes more than just a simple phone app, or a single Radio Shack meter or two. And most shops could not afford an acoustic chamber with the proper tools. I think I've seen one...video on Youtube that someone of a shop somewhere, DID, build an acoustic chamber for accurate sound measurements. Don't recall who it was.

The shop(s) that say "2-low / medium" or "3-medium"...that's purely a subjective comment, based on testing other guns shot sound. And how well that persons ears are performing and the ambient sounds...THAT day.

For MOST applications, the Pyramyd Air method is probably close enough for most of us at time of purchase, or thinking of purchase.

A while back I thought I would evaluate the report from my .177's Wolverine and Regal swapping the moderators. I have a 6" Huggett on my Regal and a 4" ODB on the Wolverine. I got the short ODB to keep the Wolverine as short as I could and keep it noise acceptable. I loaded some sound apps. to the I phone. I figured even if the dB's are not accurate dB numbers who cares at least I would have reliable data if I repeated the tests using the exact parameters. I test electrical equipment everyday for a living so I know how to duplicate tests for comparison. BUT the phone apps were completely unreliable. Sometimes I would get the lowest dB reading with naked gun. And the report was defiantly not quiet. At one time we had old sound instruments in our lab and maybe sometime I will try to dig it up. Point is the phone apps were a joke.

In my opinion we may be money ahead to buy a air gun without a moderator. I bought my Regal with a Daystate moderator and for some reason I wanted it quieter so I bought the Huggett. I couldn't take the factory moderator off. AOA is in town so I ran it down to them to see if they could take it off. They did but it cracked in the process. So if I buy new. I won't buy a moderator attached.

I put a hill moderator on mine and it is very quiet. Its a hunting machine. I helped out my neighbor Saturday and the P-Rod kilt 9 pigeons. It was a blast and it takes em down.

It isn't available or has been discontinued, and it is tragic either way. Dime size groups at 50 paces and the loudest thing about it to the shooter (me) is the piston.

My Avenger in 25 cal is pretty quiet, and I enjoy the quick follow ups and rotary magazine. It is pretty quiet, I think, but louder than the Benjamin. It is settling in quite nicely and shooting just over dime size groups at the same distance.

I have no concept of shooting a squirrel 100 yards away. I doubt I could see the thing, but that isn't the usefulness for me having the larger caliber.

For the Sound Factor, I don't think the 3 rating of the Avenger is quiet back yard friendly. I live spread out on about an acre and it is plenty friendly. Maybe 22 short loud?

The Texan isn't. It isn't earplug loud, but they rate it 5+ (Loud as Hell) and it just isn't. It would be sketchy for even my use and 22 LR won't raise an eyebrow in the area. I hope I answered this correctly.
