Looking to buy my first air rifle.

Hello all,

Looking to purchase a air rifle at a budget of $500 or less. With so many brands and all the models I feel like it’s just best to asks for help. I would be using mostly for small game and the occasional empty beer can target. Thinking .22 break barrel would be my best bet. Accuracy and reliability is probably most important to me. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

Justin

I have had terrible luck with the accuracy of Weihrauchs in .22

I'd get an HW77K or an HW95 in .177. The HW77K would probably be a little easier to shoot accurately right out of the box.

If you are set on a .22, there is always the RWS34 breakbarrel and the sidelever RWS48.

The 48 makes an excellent hunting rifle and is very easy to put a sling on it. Tuned down a little to about 17fpe they are lasers and extremely easy to shoot.

I'll +3 the HW95. I have one in .22 that except for a set of Mac1 screw cups has never had anything else done to it and as long as I do my part, will shoot dime sized groups at 25 yards with Air Arms Falcon pellets. Bought a few years back when AoA was selling them for $299.99. Scope is a Hawke Airmax 3-9x40 AO with the AMX reticle.

Get a RWS 54 because it has a recoil-less system. These have a smooth feeling shot cycle, are well built, and hit hard, ALSO thankfully lacking a goofy break barrel, it has a fixed barrel instead.

I was raised on nice spring piston air rifles, have owned a few mentioned in this thread, nope I only want recoil-less.

BINGO!!! only negatives are heavy and Bob Barkers. I call loud any loud shooting gun Bob Barker. Yo!

Well, if you also want a pretty good piece of glass then you need to look at something like that RWS Model 34 in .177 if you need more than 40 yards of range and in .22 if you want a little more smack down. That rifle and a fair optic will set you back about that much. Look at the SWFA line of fixed power scopes for your glass.

There have been a lot of good suggestions but some of them are way over your budget and MOST of them will push you well over your budget if you add a decent optic. Really do like the TX200s and the HW97s but price is going to be over your stated budget.

By "small game," what do specifically mean? Squirrels and rabbits are easily taken with .177 caliber; there's no NEED for .22 or .25. However, need is not the only reason; and, a .22 will probably shoot with the same characteristics out to about 30 yards--so there's little pro/con at that range.

issues to be aware of

(1) weight, especially when scoped. How heavy is too heavy for you?

(2) loudness. If your context allows loud, it's all good.

(3) quality control out of the box (typically the British and German made are more reliable out of the box); lower priced guns can work well, too; it's more of a gamble

(4) hold sensitive (over 950 fps, .177, is magnum power--and harder to manage). Magnums require more skill, typically.

(5) pellet picky

Whatever meets your needs/wants--enjoy!

Hey thanks for all the great feedback it’s appreciated. Small game for me are squirrels, crows, rabbits, and pocket gophers. Pretty much sums up what I be looking to shoot. I guess if I could find something to shoot 40 yards in 1-1.5 inch pattern I’d be happy. I guess I don’t need a .22 and I could go with the .177. A lot of good rifles mentioned and some are pretty pricy. So another question I have is I seen some refurbished rifles, should I stay away from them? I’ve seen some a couple hundred dollars less then the cost of new.
