From the way that you are holding over using the reticle hash marks, it sounds like the scope is being canted, not level with the horizon. Mounting a permanent bubble level on that scope tube will ensure that the scope is always held perfect to gravity. Scope bubble levels are cheap and readily available on eBay, Amazon, or at the local gun shop. They are easily set up on the scope tube using a weighted plum line to align the scope's cross hairs with the hanging string. Here's a bubble level set up on a scope sitting in a tripod.
