Long Term Gun Storage...the anti Rust Mob

Hey another fun forum idea that I’m sure we all have ideas.

I was on another forum today talking about how my M4 and other firearms I’ve done long term storage in a drum of oil and another time in a vacuum bag with silica gel packs for moisture. So, I thought, PCPs and springers are a bit different as you can’t put the whole gun in a drum of oil and not run into some problems with your cylinder and all. That being said, post your anti rust solutions here!

My long term storage idea is still the vacuum bag that you can put long dresses in, seals it all around the gun, in combination with a wipe down of oil and silica gel packs for moisture.

Let’s hear it.

Too vague in the department of whats said gun is going to be subjected too while in storage ?

For instance if in a shed / storage unit etc where the temp extreme is large the guns going to sweat ! and that effects not only exterior but interior surfaces and parts.

In the above situation no wiping down of the exterior is going to prevent rust to screws and fasteners, springs or any other steel parts within the gun.

Brass with go green from oxidation and so forth.

Yeah I’ve thought about that hence the desiccant silica packs - has worked wonders on a ten year storage of a rare 1898 Mosin Nagant for me. I’ll check on it from time to time but no change in the wood or metal whatsoever. Silica is the best desiccant I know of, but there are others. Of course, you have to not put your gun in a boiling hot conditions, but even still the silica should prevent the wood’s moisture from having an impact. I think mostly what my long term storage idea would be moderate temperature, like a basement and so forth. Right now my rifles in storage are in temperatures no greater than 80 degrees.

I live in a place that is very humid, even in cold weather and so I have found little dehumidifier wardrobe packs and oil packs to hang in my gun cabinets that keep away rust etc... Had a 12 gauge sit untouched for 5 months without issue in a reasonably consistent temperature cellar. No idea if it would fare well over ten years mind as generally too keen to fondly my guns to leave them alone that long.
