Log Deck Ground Squirrel #3

Storm is brewing this afternoon, probably just wind and rain tonight, snow level is just up the hill. This big male was watching me do some chores and I noticed him. I had to sneak around the side of the house and grab my .25 Crown, imagine a grown 70 year old sneaking around because of a ground squirrel !!! Got the Crown and set-up for my 30 yard shot, in less than 10 minutes the squirrel let his curiosity override his better judgement. A loud smack and the NSA 26.8 grain slug had found its mark, it was all over, no death throes, fast humane kill.

Last week I had shot another ground squirrel, but could not recover it from where it fell down between the logs.

That is one dead ground squirrel, I bet he didn’t twitch! As soon as I started reading your post and you got to the part where you spotted him, immediately I had images of someone sneaking back to the house to get his rifle. I love it. I’ve done it. I believe it’s called serendipity When you get to whack a varmint when you’re doing yardwork.

Mr. Flintsack,

Haha, my pulse, blood pressure and what ever else I have left show some life!!!! I spend all my mad money on my air rifle addiction and ever since the Covid 19 restrictions I can do this at home and never leave the property. I have done business with several forum vendors and was able to find everything I wanted so far plus good customer service.

I am relatively new to air rifles and the forum, however varmints have never been safe around my place, just used rim fire rifles before. I follow several guys who have it in for ground squirrels and nocturnal rat hunting. Great videos, pictures and write-ups. Always learn new tricks and tips from these guys and most of all ... new "have to have rifles, scopes and ammo".

Good luck with your pesting, stay healthy and safe

Arrowhead1951,

Very nice story, bed time sweet dreams stuff, for me and engaging.

YES I can imagine sneaking around the house and my heart would be pounding, because I get excited and sometimes forget to breathe, some wish I would keep forgetting. HaHa.

That slug entered under chin / shoulder Starboard side and exited Port side...... what a mess the insides were. Very Cool Sir.

I reckon the Taipan in .22 will perform equally well, in terms of knockdown / STAY DOWN, with a Hades or Predator Poly mag. I am not getting into a comparison between .25 and .22 just my observation after shooting a few critters........ your mileage may vary.

Peace Be With You

We have log decks left over from a job on our place and the squirrels thrive in them. I will have to give the .25 a try. So far I’ve done all my peering with a .177. Hopefully I will be as successful here.

Howdy Rich,

It would be inconsiderate of me to not offer to assist you in de-verminizing the log deck.

I am offering to help, Sir.
