Lighter Glass

Ok, so I ordered my .177 WC and I have several scopes that I could put on. But they are all what I would call on the heavy side. If I wanted a lighter scope, what are some suggestions? I see that the Emerald weighs in at 25 oz and is lighter than my Hawke Sidewinder at 30.7 oz. but since I intend for this to be my pesting gun for now, I got the 177 and synthetic stock making it light. Are there any other light scopes with decent glass out there? Or is the Emerald about the lower limit of decent, light glass?

I picked up a 3-12x42 MTC Mamba lite for my synthetic Streamline and it is awesome. I had a Sidewinder on it and it felt top heavy. I have a Nitesite Viper on top of the MTC and shoot starlings at night in the barns, so far I haven't had a problem and the lighted reticle really stands out in the nitesite to pick up the birds. I got mine from Treiner Outdoors back in the summer.

Clear Ridge 3-9 Ultra RM can be had with a mil dot and AO for an advertised 11.9oz. I've never looked through one, but they seem to be well rated. There are many options in the 18oz range if you stick to AO vs side focus. Vortex Diamondback 4-12 AO BDC reticle has nice glass, a superb hunting reticle, and comes in at 18oz. Hawke 1" tube AO Airmax scopes such as the 4-12AMX, have a nice reticle (possibly on the fine side for hunting) and come in at a reasonable 18oz. I like everything about the Sightron SII but the reticle. They are true mil dot at max power. If you are zoomed out to a hunting magnification, then the mil dots are so far apart, they are all but useless for holdover. Especially if you go for the 6-24x. The reticle is on the thick side as well, which could be desired for low light hunting. The FX 3-12AO IR is nice and comes in at a reasonable weight if you are into the IR without paying a big weight penalty. I suspect that scope is made by Sightron.

Thanks for the input. I went and looked at these choices and based on the reticle I like the Mamba the best. The Sightron is very nice and would be the lightest at 16 oz. Let's see what I get for Christmas :) My kids all got the word from my wife that I have airgun on the brain so I'm thinking I might get a little help.
Thanks for the input fellas.

All good stuff guys. thanks for the input. I just checked on a scope I have in a box on the shelf. I have a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x40 that weighs in about 19 oz. i think maybe I'll use it until I make a decision about a scope. I know all the kids are instructed to get me airgun gift cards so I think I may have a little cash to put on something if I want a better scope. I really like the reticle on the Mamba. I was hoping to stick around the 20 oz or less. I had this Crossfire on my Marauder 177 and it was very nice.

I also had a 30 mm Hawke on my Wildcat and concluded the set-up was too heavy. I ended up with a 2.5-16x42 mildot Bushnell Elite 6500 - this scope weighs 17.3 ounces. The Bushnell is the lightest 30mm tube, mildot reticle, side focus to 10 yards, >40mm objective & variable zoom I could find less than $1000. I'm sure there is something else out there....I just could not find it in a 30mm tube.

The Bushnell glass seems clearer around the outside tube edge and is brighter than my Hawke at equal zoom in good daylight.

I almost picked a Hawke Vantage 3-12x44, which weights 17.3 ounces, but got scared away by some negative reviews (not here) & it has a 25mm tube. Hope this helps & Merry Christmas.
