Before you buy this Leupold 3-9x33 ( https://www.leupold.com/scopes/rifle-scopes/vx-freedom-efr-3-9x33) I advise you to take a look at the reticle and make sure its what you want. The reticle is a "Fine Duplex"... better suited to a light hunting rifle than an air rifle. And another issue to consider is the fact that the parallax focus ring on the front of that scope is really hard to turn. A few years ago I had one of the Leupold 3-9x40 EFR scopes with the "Target Dot" reticle and turning that focus ring on the front was terribly hard to do. There are so many scopes out there that are better suited to an air rifle than this Leupold my friend.

People who specifically buy Leupolds are seeking the lightest weight scopes possible with the nicest glass with very repeatable turrets for clicking and made in the USA from a long standing company. Big plus they will withstand even magnum springers.

They are the best bang for the buck in quality optics IMHO for the sheer optical greatness you need to pay at least double or triple to get comparable glass from other brands. Leupold uses European glass.

I agree my only gripe is the limited reticle options and wait till their Custom Shop reopens early to mid next year.

Lots of other scope company's make great "lightweight scopes" with "repeatable turrets", and many other scopes work just fine on "springers" too. No way does anyone have to pay "double" or "triple" to get a scope with comparable glass. You are right about the limited reticle options though...the problem with that is Leupold's Custom Shop also charges a minimum of $160.00 to install a different reticle for you...and that's if you don't mind waiting on them to do it.

As to the glass they use, Leupold may use Schott glass from Germany in a few of their most top end scopes, but they use plain Japanese glass on most of the others. Just like most other scope company's - including most of the "European" companys - they bid for "lots" on Japanese glass of varying quality, then the glass is made into lenses which are ground to exact specifications. There are only a couple company's in Germany & Japan capable of grinding lenses to these high end specifications. Once the lenses are ground they are shipped to the United States where Leupold "assembles" the lenses and other components into a finished product. There is no doubt that Leupold has a reputation for making a quality product...but they are way over priced in my opinion and I have owned several of them.

You can call Leupold and ask them where they get the lenses for their scopes and where they are assembled if you please...or just watch this video from Leupold:

My original question was for a Diana 22 48 and A Diana 54 in 22. Minimum range would be 25 yards.Target berms are 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100. Rifles are sighted in at 50. Just looking for best optics.

Leupold or a Japan made scope. You won't believe how many broken scopes I have gone through on my 48s and 52s and 54s over the past 20+ years. If you can still find a Weaver V16 it's a Japan made affordable scope that handles very well on magnum springers. Get the duplex the target dot may be hard to see. The other one that seemed to handle was the old Philipine Bushnell Legend 5-15x40 AO Mildot.

Cheapest out there is the $259-$299 Japan Bushnell TAC 5-15x40 AO Mildot that has glass like the $699 SWFA SS 3-15x42 and with a much better more comfortable eyebox. If you like the SWFA SS you will definitely like this one even more.

Odoyle, I am planning on using one of Hector Medina’s Bullseye mounts so I am not too concerned on the recoil. For my purposes, I shoot 100% target. I do have a Sightron Big Sky 36 fixed but was looking for a lower power for my 52. When I am ready Leupold is what I am looking at as I tend to by items that will last, maybe not cutting edge, but be usable and serviceable.

Chuck, I'm looking at scopes with similar specs to some of those mentioned in this thread. Your Athlon list is very helpful. Question for you. I have been leaning toward the Midas Tac. Can I ask why you listed the Midas BTR Gen 2 as opposed to the Midas Tac HD? Is it because you prefer the SFP? Just trying to learn. Thanks for the good info.
