Leupold EFR

Thats what I called to ask. They are supposed to return my call. I hope we don't loose another American company service.

Anschutz of North America had closed their Custom Shop recently due to Covid-19, and I hope they will again reopen soon. They provide good services and it would be a shame to loose that valuable custom talent.

Boy I almost messed up again. I was looking at getting another EFR, and send it for a reticle change. I guess their custom is closed and has been since Oct. I have a call into Leupold to confirm but I am glad I didn't buy a scope that wouldn't fit my needs.

I have a 6.5 X 20 X 40 mm EFR AO Leupold scope with a duplex reticle on my FX Royale .22. The AO is a pain, but love it for 30-40 yard back yard pesting. I set magnification at 10X and AO to be in focus at 25 yards and generally leave it there. I would prefer an MOA /MOA reticle with hash marks, but I’m used to the duplex now for hold overs under 50 yards.

I have a couple on silhouette guns that have 6.5-20 with .5moa dots reticles in them they are great for their purpose. I bought a 6.5-20 a few years back and had a new reticle put in it for air gunning I also had them put a factory mark at 16x so I could use it in hunter FT but the chosen reticle was too busy for me and a little faint so I sold it thinking I would find something better. Notice I am still buying scopes to try. I was looking thru emails this morning my last 1/2 MOA dot was installed 10 years ago Leupold charged $60 2 years ago it was $200 

I have a couple Leupolds with an upper power of 16 or 18 with hunter hold reticle its only two marks. The min parallax was somewhere around 25 yards. I keep thinking about trying to readjust the min focus to 10 yards. They have sit on their hunting rifles for the last the years without moving.

They are 100% reliable for clicking to dial in your yardage shots you don't even need a fancy reticle. Last 4 Leupolds I bought just recently I probably won't have Custom Shop reticles installed them and just click.

I don’t ever click turrets on my 2FP Leupold scope, and just use the Zoom magnification and AO for estimating distance and hold overs. Don’t need a fancy reticle, just more variety with EFR scopes, There is no variety of reticles without going custom. 

I may be missing your point. Please clarify.

When you say you don’t like fancy reticles what exactly do you mean? What reticle from Leupold do you like and why/ why not? Please be descriptive in your answer as I want to understand your intent. 

Assume this is for pesting and less than 50 yards.

I normally do like fancy holdover Reticles for scopes I don't intend on clicking such as scopes originating from China as a personal preference while others click away. 

I have 2 different custom shop Leupold reticles in 4 scopes in both EFR power configurations 3-9x33 and 6.5-20x40 and decided on clicking so the fancy reticles are no longer necessary in my Leupold case and keeps the view clean and unobstructed.

Before Air guns I always shot crosshair. Silhouette shooting it was customary to dial for the animal distance. I mostly used Leupolds or Weaver T scopes because the adjustments are repeatable. When I started shooting Hunter Field Target dialing for distance is not allowed and the targets are small. I shot for awhile without any holdover references just attempting to split distances on the duplex reticle. I saw a scope with dots or hash marks would be beneficial. So I bought a Leupold EFR and sent it in for a reticle change. The leupold techs I dealt with told me my options were limited for the EFR so I chose a christmas tree type reticle. For me it was too busy I would almost get dizzy looking thru all the spots. I also bought a Aztec that had a similar reticle and it was worse for my eyes. If it were not for FT I probably would just click to my desired target distance and shoot crosshairs. On my silhouette guns I have the turrets marked for each animal chickens are -0- I hope my explanation was understandable.

The Aztecs have chromatic aberration at varying levels of magnification that appears to be a common trait in that brand that most airgunners just bear and learn to live with until they decide to switch brands. The few people who can't see it at all are very lucky IMHO because their eyes are a lot more forgiving than mine and don't get dizzy like I do looking through these kinds of scopes.

I had the Aztec and for me, the reticle was too busy and I could not get the focus ring at higher magnifications to be as clear as other scopes at 100 yard distances. Reticle also was too fine for my 100 yard BR needs. I may possibly have had a defective scope. I do realize others love their Aztecs, just not what I wanted so I sent it back. Have a few Athlons, a Vortex diamond back and a couple of Sightrons which have served me well. 

Appreciate your perspective as to how/why you used crosshair reticles based on your shooting requirements. I will say that using the points on my Duplex reticle with the EFR for estimating holdovers is not as precise as if I had a hash mark reticle. It does take some getting used to and having the AO at the end of the scope vs. a side parallax is cumbersome. But, for 30-40 yard squirrel pesting, I’m used to it. However, there was a learning curve for me. 

I like the Leupold glass, bright sight picture and extremely clear focus so much that I can get over the other items.
