Lelya vs Tiapan Short

I’ve decided I need a short and quiet “truck gun” 😁

Between the EDgun Lelya and the Tiapan Veteran short which is quieter in .22 and .25 caliber?

Is the Lelya in .25 quieter than in .22?

How does the Leshiy compare sound wise?

All in stock form and tuned for similar power.

I should have stated originally that I’ve owned a .22 veteran long and currently pcp wise I have a Vulcan 2 in .22 with a custom shroud I did and a Tatsu on the end. Also, I don’t want to have to add an ldc to make it quieter.

Thanks for the input.

Steve

Quick lesson on 'sound' from an airgun...its due mostly in part to residual muzzle pressure, and bore size. The shorter the barrel, and/or the longer the valve duration(pellet velocity), and the larger the bore the more of it. Its really not a variable of branding....so the longest barrel YOU'RE comfortable with, at the lowest speed YOU can shoot at, that has a modest LDC attached on the end, will be the quietest...out of the box comparison-wise I cannot help, not sure which of thee 3 configurations do best, but it'll be the one described as I have in terms of barrel length/valve duration / ldc...

edgun leyla all the way its so accurate and the ability to work on it with minor tools and with little to no skills prior in fixing guns your sure to have it done in no time and back in the field and add the videos by brain at edgun west with his step by step and is always on call type work habbit. Man edgun all the way. This gun can shoot and everyone that comes over and even my wife's friends say its a pretty badass looking gun followed with can i hold or shoot it.

I think the Lelya 2.0 and Veteran compact are both 23.5” OAL guns. The Lelya barrel is over an inch longer from posted specs. 14.84” on the Lelya 2.0 vs 13.5” on the Vet Compact.

I have not owned a Mutant...yet😊 but would like to. Many say it has a superior trigger. I can not compare.

I do have a Lelya 2.0 in .25. It is tuned to shoot the 34s at 770fps. It is very quiet and I am very pleased with it. No doubt it is my current favorite. EDs triggers work fine for me. I am not a BR shooter or trigger snob by any means. I find I can adjust them very light, crisp and reliable.

I certainly recommend the Lelya 2.0. It is outstanding IMO for many reasons that have the OP considering one in the first place. I can not; however, provide a direct comparison to the Vet Compact.

I've owned a Lelya 2.0 in .22 for over about a year now. Very very pleased with it, very pleased, super happy with it, cant believe how awesome it is. It's my dream mini squirrel gun! So, I might be a little bias.

The Lelya comes with it's own moderator so it's fine out of the box. Also, forward cocking handle on both sides gives the Lelya 2.0's a huge advantage over the Veteran, in my opinion. As for anything else, I can not say because I never shot a Veteran.

If you can live with an airgun that isn't doing every last bit of power it's capable of, the Veteran Short at 20 foot pounds in .22 is impressively quiet with factory moderator.

Most guys seem to want their airguns to live at the limit of what it can do. I like quiet and I like lots of shots. 20 foot pounds will kill critters prairie dog sized and under out to 100 yards just fine.

I bought my Veteran specifically for what you're talking about, a nice short gun that is convenient to maneuver in tight spaces. I even bought the DonnyFl adapter so that I could put an extra moderator on there and have it be quiet AND powerful. Well, I didn't shoot it ten times with the extra moderator before I took it off and backed the power back down. To add an extra six inches simply ruined the gun for me and my reasoning for wanting it.

So, mine lives at 20fpe and really likes the 14.3 JSB, although I'll lob in some 18.1s on occasion. Right before they hibernated, I hit and killed a pdog at 140 yards. That same day (low wind) I dropped a bunch more from 65-100 yards and dropped another handful from 100-120. If memory serves, I got around 25 in about an hour and a half that day. Once every few weeks, I go shoot the Euro doves and starlings at my extended family's feed lot. I usually set up about 65 yards from the only tree around. An hour usually produces around 30 doves, without filling the gun. Point being, low power can do the job. I get around 80-100 shots from 230 bar down to 120.

A few months ago the field target club that I'm part of decided to have a different kinds of match with 10x power limit and known distances. I decided the Veteran would be a fun gun to shoot at that match. While shooting at the sight in range the guy next to me was in awe at how quiet it was. He had recently gotten a Red Wolf in 20fpe for field target. His comment was, "That's really quiet! And I know quiet, shooting this electronic Red Wolf."

I’m a bit confused reading that the EDGun .25 requires frequent cleaning. Where did that myth come from? I’ve owned an R5M, and it didn’t require cleaning any more than any other LW barreled gun. Maybe once every couple of tins at the most? Just curious... ;)

Ed has made that statement. I can vouch for it as well, at least at the beginning. Usually I run a few patches every 100 or so shots but that interval increases the more you shoot the gun. It may be a reason you were seeing accuracy issues with your R5M.

Gotcha. I hear you, but I'm still not getting why Ed's LW barrels are different than "other" LW barrels. And FYI, I had "OK accuracy" from the R5M, just not laser beam accuracy I see from my other guns. Quarter sized groups at 50 yards are OK, just not great. And I bought it used, so of course I cleaned the gun and barrel, and also cleaned it before I shot the groups that I posted somewhere here on AGN when comparing JSB and AA pellets. Every other LW barrel I owned, and also the CZ and ST barrels, only needed cleaning every blue moon. Hell, I put 2500 rounds through my .22 Cricket mini before I cleaned the barrel, and it was just as accurate as the day I cleaned it. Same goes for the .25 LW barrel in my Cricket bull pup, the ST barrel in my .30 FX Bobcat, and the .177 LW barrel in my Brocock Bantam. I don't doubt that the EDgun LW barrel needs to be seasoned when new, as with most new barrels. I was talking after the gun is broken in for reference. My bad for not specifying that...

☝🏽

This is true. On a good note, my R5M didn't take long to lead in after cleaning the barrel. I wanted to shoot at least 30 pellets to lead in and I was expecting it to be all over the place although it wasn't the case.

I have owned both. The Short Mutant in .22 and the Lelya in .22

The Taipan Mutant in .22 caliber could be adjusted to shoot quite powerfully...DonnyFL's Speed Dial made adjusting the hammer spring/power very easy. However, the Mutant needed a moderator to obtain what I would call "undetectable"shooting status at it's higher power potential.

The .22 Lelya v.O, factory dead quiet, with a few less fpe, but plenty enough to get the job done at normal pesting ranges.

The Taipan's have an ugly, bulky, clunky wood stock. The Lelya does not.

Both are tiny!!!

Power + = Taipan

Fully adequate in all respects = Lelya

Your needs/use should dictate your choice!
