Larger caliber moderators for smaller calibers

DonnyFL recommends one size up from .177-.25, and from .30-.50 he says you can have the same caliber as the pellet. The reason for this is the .177-.25 has a very precise diameter only slightly larger than the pellet, whereas the .30-.50 has more wiggle room for the same caliber size. He mostly does this because a lot of manufacturers don’t have good machining/threading/etc and you will get pellet clipping. 



Personally I have the Sumo in both .25 and .30 for my Talon, and I cannot tell the difference. But I do use my .25 cal LDC for my .25 cal gun, mostly out of principle. And it works great.

Both of my DonnyFl Tantos are .22 and fitted on .22s, no issues. One I swap between by Bantam HR, (which doesn’t need it) and my pp700sa which does, again no issues. They screw on straight for me.🥴

I think clipping is usually a failure with a barrel adapter not being properly placed or over sized and tilted. For example, a 14mm barrel with a 16mm slide in adapter placed on it, preventing a good alignment.

I usually buy Huggett and get that exact size caliber. Haven't seen any issues yet...

Any particular reason you prefer Hugget or just personal preference? I just picked up a Huggett after always using Donnys.

I prefer HUGGETTS because they are quieter and a lot lighter and less POI change and a most of all I am an extreme accuracy fanatic and tried them all first hand swapping with many many many (just waytoo many to count) of my guns. The HW LDCs are great too. I have a drawer full of different LDCs to test on all new guns I buy and keep the most accurate one on that particular gun. Been buying lots of new HUGGETTS to replace what I used I keep them on the guns and don't unscrew just keep them gun-specific. Dont even unscrew to clean barrel I just use a straw and pull through. Keep things perfect all the time no unscrewing anything.

I agree, spend your money on pellets or something else, unless you need your gun to be extremely quiet or you just want a new moderator. You can buy caliber specific moderators but the sound difference won't be that noticeable. I don't need my guns to be extremely quiet but I sure like it!

OdB moderators are light and quiet too. Very similar in performance and weight to the Hugget moderators with a slightly different look. They're great moderators! They are kind of expensive though.

Neil Clague makes custom moderators and shrouds for any gun. They work great and look even better. Carbon, aluminum, titanium, one chamber, two, three, whatever you want. He knows what works for each particular gun and caliber but will collaborate on materials with you. His prices are very reasonable and he makes them in about a week. He's been making them for a long time and knows his stuff. He doesn't advertise but lots of people on this board and elsewhere own his moderators and shrouds.

I ran a Tanto .25 I ported to 3/64" at back extra holes and added true acoustic material.

I have a brand new stock Emperor .30 on it

Condor sending 29 grain RBT Griffin slugs at up to 1070fps. Sounds like a .410 gauge with nothing on it.

The Tanto is quieter modded by me. Before I modded it it recoiled and I couldn't push 36 grain NSA FB over 900. with either DonnyFL.

Now no problem sending 36 grain RBT Griffins at 1000 and 29's at 1070


The Emperor is a nicer system with less back pressure.

Hey James, how are you bud? You picked up 100fps? Am I reading that right? What exactly did you do to the Tanto? Where did you do the porting exactly? Got any pictures? I have a Sumo sitting here that doesn't get used much, I've experimented with and without internal baffling materials with very little effect, but never ported one. I'd love to do some experimenting with it like you did. Have a good evening.

For my Brocock compatto .177 I went up a size and I have a .22 cal Tanto on the Compatto. And I have ordered a FX Crown Continuum in cal 22 I will probably get a .25 cal Or 30 Sumo, for the 25 cal barrel. I might keep using the Tanto on the Crown here depending how it works, but I already bought a Sumo which is sitting in my gun safe in Idaho, along with the .22 cal Tanto. I live in the Netherlands and when I travel home to Idaho I was flat out told by the shop don’t try to take the moderators though US Customs.

Also, one of the reasons I went with DonnyFL is the company’s reputation of staying in contact with their customers, and I have seen it myself on this forum. Hugget seems to make a great product, and one day I might try them. I have done a sound test myself with the Tanto on my Compatto using a noise dosimeter app (NIOSH available Apple App Store) and saw a 25 to 30% reduction in noise. So for now I am sold on DonnyFL fan.

Yeah this is intriguing. I’ve seen that Donny’s LDCs are ingeniously made, and I always think to myself he has probably figured it all out for me, but any chance to make it quieter is always welcome in my book.
